Brand new and confused
#1
I am an LPN of 16 yrs, have 3 kids (13yr,22mo,6mo which I mention only because I would love to know what study guides are worth the precious time and effort to buy and study) and I am ready to get started on my RN thru EC. I have only completed Info Tech & Eng.Comp 1 (both from a community college). I need a direction to start from. I am seeing DSST, CLEP and ECE as testing options. Which are easier to study for? Where can I get a list of what CLEP tests are offered &/OR DSST? (The ECE exams seem pricey and some one mentioned that CLEP cost less) Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to enroll until I absolutely have to so the advisors are out but everyone here seems to be so well informed I would rather as you.......Thanks...Kathy

Charter Oak's catalog offers a handy break-down of all the major tests out there.

Note that they only grant 18 (sometimes 24) credits for high scores on the GRE subject exams, whereas Excelsior grants up to 30, and Thomas Edison none. Charter Oak also recognizes some upper level courses as lower level.

The chart of tests begins on page 87 of the PDF (83 of the catalog):

It would be helpful if you could give us some more specifics, such as which program you are pursuing (associate of science, associate of applied science, or bachelor of science), what certifications you have, etc.

Here is a list of CLEP exams: CLEP: Exam Descriptions

Hi! I am a diploma LPN. I only have the 2 college courses stated in my cry for help post. I am looking for the fastest and easiest way to get my RN so I guess an AAS would suffice (the AS is what I probably will aim for so I can go on in the future for the advanced degrees). I have received very helpful info. I have signed on with EC and have their requirements. I now have lists of CLEP, DSST and ECE exams. I am a little confused with the exams that will satisfy EC (for example: Humanities-General by CLEP or the "Intro" exams) that are not ECE exams. I was planning to start easy with Intro to Sociology through CLEP. I have laid out the CLEP exams as Humanities, Intro to Sociology, & if needed Biology (this would be to satisfy the requirement of a Natural Science related to Nursing??). The DSSTs as Intro to World Religions and Lifespan Dev. Psych. Saving ECE exams for Ethics: Theory and Practice, Foundations of Gero, A&P and Micro. Please direct me in anyway if you see me go astray!! Thanks for the above and for any info you have.........Kathy

Kathy,

I think you are on the right track. I would recommend that you just plug in the courses you want to do into the AAS template on EC and you will be able to tick them off your list as you go. Remember you can also do the nursing exams along way. You don't have to put them off to the end. So you may want to mix them in so you don't feel like all the hard ones are saved for last. Good luck!
