Graduate credits : Annenberg Media

Does anyone know if EC will accept these for any credit?

Excelsior takes 15 credits in transfer for their MA in Liberal Studies. I bet they would take these. It says on their site:

"Master of Arts in Liberal Studies
A master's degree can be the key to advancing your career or pursuing a topic of great personal interest. Excelsior College offers you the most efficient way to enhance your career and personal growth through the Master of Arts program in Liberal Studies.
This Online Program Accepts Up to 15 of Your Previously Earned Graduate-Level Credits
That's nearly half the 33 credits required for the degree. As a student in this program, you can:

* Successfully balance the demands of work, family, and school through our flexible schedule.
* Gain mastery of two or more disciplines.
* Earn credit from a variety of sources including courses from Excelsior College or another institution, or an independent learning contract with Excelsior College faculty.
* New! Earn credit from approved NYSUT interdisciplinary courses for New York State teachers.
* Customize your program with in-depth study on a topic of your choice."

And they'd probably take them as either upper level free electives or upper level arts and science electives for a bachelor's degree. The DSST Foundations of Education exam was classified as Social Science on my status report, so I am thinking most of these may be social science credits as well, except for the ones with the natural science prefixes. I'm going to send an email and see what they say...

Colorado State University is the issuer of the graduate credit.
Current tuition is "Tuition is currently $182 for 2 credit courses and $273 for 3 credit courses, plus a $20 technology fee per semester."

That's under $100 per credit for grad credit. As far as I know, that is the cheapest in the US. The next cheapest is APUS. The thing is, they don't offer a degree- so you would have to apply the credit to a grad school that accepts transfer credit, and in the right area. Sadly, only a handful of people will actually be able to really exploit this program. I think it is mostly used by teachers for the masters +30 salary grade increase. Those 30 credits don't have to be inside a degree, they can be random.

The prefix is EDU, so they are clearly classified under the dept "Education."

Whoever asked about undergrad- EDU credits are classified at TESC as free electives. TESC might take these into a master program, they have a generous master transfer policy- 12 credits I believe...but don't quote me. And really, it would only be the Master of Liberal Arts, because the Master in Ed requires that you be be a teacher first.

*edit- I found 2 of the classes on the list under "Science" that have Natural Science pre-fixes rather than education! THAT is worth investigation!! That might be open for 6 grad level science credits! (which would surely be countable as undergrad, at least at TESC)

Actually, CMU charges $265.00 a credit hr at McGuire AFB, NJ and I think at all the military bases. Considering they have 5 week classes and 8 week online, that's not bad also. Just a moot point, but one that may interest some.

Actually, I just found out that price is for Graduate military, I believe graduate tuition is $400.00 a cr hr.

RESPONSE: Unfortunately, we would not accept this graduate credit into our Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program. Let me explain. I reviewed the website and found that these workshops are offered by the school's Division of Continuing Education ... therefore, these credits are likely "Professional Development or Continuation Education Units" (the official college transcript would likely indicate them as such) and Excelsior College does not accept CEUs into our degree programs. Also, the workshops are Pass/Fail and our MA-LS degree program requires a letter grades of B- (or better) for acceptable transfer credits. Some colleges are willing to state that an "S" (satisfactory) or "P" (pass) grade is equivalent to a grade of ???? (some colleges will not). Usually, the back of the official transcript will state any equivalencies. In summary, these workshops would not provide you acceptable graduate-level transfer credits to our college.

Suggestion: Since these credits are being offered by Colorado State University, you may want to ask them which "degree programs" of their college would accept these credits. We have often seen that colleges will offer CE courses, but not allow them into their own degree programs.

While researching my grad school options, I've found several schools with tuition rates below what APUS charges, but it's resident tuition. Cool thing is, many schools give resident tuition to active duty military without regard to where you live.

Alissa, This might be worth more follow up. I think the person who helped you is speaking about CEUs, which if true, wouldn't count for grad credit anywhere....but I'm not sure that these would transcribe as CEUs. The stuff I'm looking at clearly states credit. Hummm.
