Just wanted to share our good news! Our 17yo homeschooled son just passed this CLEP yesterday! We were a little worried since the studying had to be interupted for an emergency trip to Boston (a friend's 14yo daughter almost didn't pull through her cancer treatment) and a family reunion in CA for 2 weeks. But he pulled it off and now that's over with
We used Vol. 1 of Exploring America (Notgrass) as our text and then studied the REA book extensively including taking each of the practice tests twice. He also watched some of the videos listed on this site ( Resource: A Biography of America) and did a few of the quizzes on the AP site. A few events/people he googled for further research. Oh, he also skimmed through portions of the Sparknotes US History book.
Thanks for letting me share our joy!

Outstanding!!! With those scores, I'd suggest using the REA general exam guide for the Social Science and History exam- he should sit it soon. It's content is over 50% US History and Western Civ. The REA book is excellent, and has only about 10 pages of content (psych, soc, govt.) that would need to read as preparation.

I've never thought of that CLEP. Thanks for the idea; we'll check it out. Since he's only taken the first half of each of these, does it matter as far as content goes? He hasn't studied W. Civ. II or US Hist. II. He is planning on doing the Gov. CLEP in a couple of months, so that might be some overlap as well.
Thanks again!

The general REA book literally has everything he needs. The nature of those exams is so general that he would probably be fine. That said, I just read you said he might take govt next, so he might as well wait on SS&H. The more "subjects" he takes inside social science, the less trouble the general social science exam presents. I took mine last and it was a piece of cake.
Subjects inside the SS&H exam:
(first 50%)
US History
Western Civ/World History
(second 50%)
Psychology
Sociology
Government
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Anthropology
*to give you an idea of what that looks like on the exam, there are roughly 45 questions on US/world history.
For the second 50%, expect under 10 questions for each of the subjects. (I think I had 3 anthropology)
He can get specific number of test questions and % from the REA or CLEP guide, they might change the distribution a bit from year to year.
