Got my transcript evaluation!
#1
Hi everyone! I got my transcript evaluation back from UMPI today, and I have attached the PDF to this thread.

I was surprised my RA Astronomy credit and my Sophia Intro to College Mathematics credit were transferred in as electives, and they did not meet the 3D and 3A/3B GEC requirements, respectively. According to the wiki and one of the 'important' threads, it looked like they would meet those requirements.

Anyway, to meet all the GEC requirements I am missing, it looks like I will need to take the courses below.

English 105: College Comp 2 (SDC)
Business Math (SDC)
Into to Ethics (Sophia)
Visual Communications (Sophia)
Art History 1 (Sophia)
Human Biology & Lab (Sophia)
Environmental Science (Sophia)
Into to Sociology (Sophia)
Spanish 1 (Sophia)
US Govt. (Sophia)

To meet some of the BABA Accounting requirements, it looks like I can take the courses below. I've already completed Intro to Business (Sophia), but it was after I sent my transcripts in, so it's not reflected on the evaluation.

Business Math (SDC duplicate) for MAT140
Accounting 201 & 202 (SDC) for BUS 361 & 362
Business Law (Sophia) for BUS350
Business Ethics (Sophia) for BUS353
Workplace Communications (Sophia) for COM210

That would leave me with exactly 10 courses (30 credits) to take at UMPI: BUS 200, 220, 244, 325, 440, 469, 352, 376, 378, and 464.

I am debating whether I should finish my BS Interdisciplinary Studies at my current college to have the GEC requirements waived, or just take all of the Sophia/SDC listed above. Finishing my current BS would involve taking an intense capstone course with several research papers at my current college, the 6 SDC and Sophia courses that transfer for the business/accounting courses listed above, and 3 easy Sophia courses that my current school requires. I would need to complete all of this by the end of July to meet the deadlines for both schools which is definitely possible. There are pros and cons to both routes. Confused

I wanted to post this here to ask for suggestions and make sure I am not missing or misinterpreting anything! Thank you so much for your help!  Smile

You can always request your academic success coach to review classes you feel should have transferred in a certain way. The BABA requires MAT140 or Calc 1 for the math course which is probably why you received elective credit. Looking at the courses at UMPI which satisfy the GEC, for 3D nothing in the list is about astronomy. The courses are about the Earth. Meteorology would count, but astronomy isn't about the Earth. Environmental Science from Sophia is an easy and fast class so don't stress!

I don't see how it would be possible to finish both degrees by the end of July. A business degree in accounting will go much further career wise than any degree in interdisciplinary studies/liberal arts. What are you looking to do? What is the purpose of obtaining the degree?

Thank you for your response! Is Jessica the academic success coach? Ok so even though Into to College Mathematics technically meets 3A/3B, they just put it as an elective because I need to take MAT140/Calc 1 or the equivalent anyway? I'm glad Environmental Science is easy, that's good to hear! Yeah, I didn't see astronomy on UMPI's list, but on the "Read before applying" thread it said, "These are NOT the only ways to meet this [science] requirement. Example: A student has previously taken an Astronomy course from a brick & mortar school. They would then just need to take Sophia's Human Biology." Maybe I misunderstood it though, or my Intro to Astronomy course wasn't enough.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant that I would need to finish the BS Interdisciplinary Studies and all that goes along with it (RA capstone course, 3 SDC, and 6 Sophia) by the end of July to then start the BABA accounting degree at UMPI in September (Fall 1) due to the degree conferral deadlines at my current school and the document deadlines at UMPI. I wouldn't finish the UMPI BABA accounting degree until early next year probably. The BS Interdisciplinary degree would only serve the purpose of waiving the UMPI GEC requirements so I wouldn't have to take as many Sophia/SDC courses. Some of the Sophia/SDC courses that go towards the business/accounting UMPI courses would also count as the electives needed at my current school to get me to 120 for the BS Interdisciplinary.

I'm looking to work in industry accounting or internal auditing, possibly starting in a junior staff accountant role. After an internship at a public firm, I decided the CPA/public accounting route wasn't for me, but I would still like to work in industry accounting. That's why I decided to go for the BABA accounting at UMPI (the accounting program at my current school is rough and would take me MUCH longer to complete).

There's a decent chance UMPI will ultimately accept your astronomy towards 3D, but they just haven't yet because they don't do so automatically (perhaps because they don't offer an astronomy course in-house).

Finishing your BS IS degree first is the priority, completing the other requirements with Sophia.org and Study.com would come second, then the final classes for the UMPI degree can come last. It really depends if you're going for a second degree at UMPI or not, it seems you're going for two degrees and not just one... Follow your current path if you need both... To be on the safe side, again, BS IS > Sophia/Study > UMPI residency credits, for filling in the learning and knowledge gaps plus getting the mix/match of requirements for gen eds/electives...

Thank you! My main goal is to get my BABA accounting at UMPI, the BS IS degree is just to waive the GECs and take less Sophia/SDC courses. I don't necessarily want a BS IS degree, but I'm considering it so I can waive the GECs.

For the BS IS, I need the capstone research course at my college, plus 7 electives to meet 120 credits. These all need to be completed by the end of July to meet my college's degree conferral deadlines. The 7 electives that I would take on Sophia/SDC at the same time I'm taking the capstone course to get the BS IS would also be ones that apply towards the UMPI BABA. Instead of just taking 7 random electives, I would take the ones that transfer and meet UMPI requirements. I would get the BS IS, then do the Sophia/Study, then UMPI like you suggested, but I need the Sophia/Study to get the BS IS, if that makes sense... I have to take both the capstone and the Sophia/SDC at the same, or the BS IS wouldn't get conferred until after I started at UMPI in September. I thought that would be a problem, but maybe not?

If I didn't get the BS IS, I would just take all the 16 Sophia/SDC courses I need for UMPI and finish them before the Fall 1 term at UMPI starts in September.

No problem, you can do the Sophia.org, Study.com and then do the capstone after you finish UMPI classes, the main goal is one of the degrees, I wouldn't focus too much on the BS IS if your main goal is the UMPI degree, you can do the UMPI degree first and then do the Capstone for the BS IS after UMPI is complete and you get the max transferred into both degrees.
