TESU LIB-495 Liberal Arts Capstone Course
#91
Today I'm trying to upload my final capstone and it appears I have accidentally uploaded another document to that location. For some reason, Otto has the ability to not allow edits to submissions. However, he does not seem to understand that it is he that controls that. So I'm going to send it into a private conversation with him and hope he can correct the issue. FYI he does not give much grace during the Christmas break so it's best to take the capstone when you have the most time. I did not follow that advice, but I really am always busy so any other time would not have mattered.

Nice. How hard did you find it to be overall? Was it very tedious trying to put together the paper?

For me, it was formatting the research into the capstone. I have written plenty of research papers but the process for creating the capstone is much more rigorous in regards to proper format and layout. It's not difficult but it was time-consuming, and I feel a lot better now moving forward so I did get something out it. I was traveling and did get sick for 2 1/2 weeks and that did hurt me. So be careful about your schedule.

Thanks, I just got my grade back and I received a B. Not sure what my class grade will be yet, but I'm happy so far. If I can do this taking a full university load, work, travel, get sick, and move others should do well.

I took Otto for the capstone and he grades hard but very fair. I achieved a solid B even loosing 2 weeks being sick. If I only took the Capstone instead of 16 cr I would have almost a perfect score. So take your capstone or start writing it now. I have everything you need here and there is no reason to wait.

I started reading the 2017 version of the Capstone guide, and it emphasizes on ‘first hand research’ again and again. Prof. Haydel keeps saying that a capstone is a ‘research study, and not a research paper’, in which you can just bring in data gathered by someone else. She highlights how a research study always involves subjects, and gives examples of how students in the past conducted surveys. I wish to ask others on this forum reg this- how do I go about this? And how mandatory is it? Will my capstone project be rejected if I just cited data analysis and results from past studies? If so, I need to get to work right away, and start conducting surveys.

The other question I have is reg the sources: the capstone guide emphasizes that the sources must be peer-reviewed journals and other primary sources. I understand citing from Wikipedia is not considered authentic, but is it not allowed to even cite from good online magazines like Harvard Business Review or Psychology Today? Somehow, the wording of the Capstone guide feels very ‘absolute’ and rigid.

Hi Supermind! I’m sure some of this may vary a little by mentor. There is only one person in my class who is looking to do a creative project with some surveys, and the mentor was kind of warning her about how much extra work it was and seemed to be trying to steer her away from it. No one else in my class is doing original research. We’re all drawing on previous studies to answer particular questions. Mine is on a not-well-known historical subject. She hasn’t offered any pushback on my topic, and in fact has only had good things to say about it. So I wouldn’t stress too much on that front.

Yes, you are allowed to quote from other reliable sources. I’m only using two articles from journals because there isn’t much out there for my topic. Most of my sources, by necessity, are books. I only have two primary sources (which have been translated). Most of my sources are biographies.
