Free College Credit from TEEX!
You can try, but I think they're strict about only accepting CAP, COS, CIS, and CMP prefixes for computer studies. I might be missing one other one, but it's definitely not management.

I am trying to fill my CIS electives, since TESC screwed me on the conversion of quarter hours to semester hours. And I got this reply from TESC

Quote: I can confirm that two TEEX courses, when transferred, will work to complete your area of study. Specifically, you should use the TEEX courses Computer Security (CIS-344) and Cyber Security for Everyone (CIS-299). Both of these courses have been added to your file as planned and once finished, you may send an official ACE transcript for update.

When I go to the course catalog on the Domestic Preparednes Campus, I see these courses:

Quote:AWR 160 Terrorism Awareness for Emergency First Responders - AWR-160
CYBER 138-W Network Assurance (AWR-138-W)
CYBER 139-W Digital Forensics Basics (AWR-139-W)
CYBER 168-W Cyber Law and White Collar Crime (AWR-168-W)
CYBER 169-W Cyber Incident Analysis and Response (AWR-169-W)
CYBER 173-W Information Security Basics (AWR-173-W)
CYBER 174-W Cyber Ethics (AWR-174-W)
CYBER 175-W Information Security for Everyone (AWR-175-W)
CYBER 176-W Business Information Continuity (AWR-176-W)
CYBER 177-W Information Risk Management (AWR-177-W)
CYBER 178-W Secure Software (AWR-178-W)

Am I missing something, or did I register improperly?

TESC said to take Computer Security, and Cyber Security for Everyone. Can anyone guide me on the right path to fill these credits, and finally get my degree.

Thanks in advance.

Information Security for Everyone, Cyber Law and White Collar Crime, and Cyber Ethics are counted as one course by ACE: Computer Security for Everyone. This is transcribed as CIS-299. Network Assurance, Digital Forensics Basics, Secure Software, and Information Security Basics are counted as one course by ACE: Computer Security for IT Professionals. TESC transcribes this as CIS-344. The rest of the modules are for Computer Security for Business Professionals or whatever it's called and TESC transcribes the course as MAN-299.

TESC probably did not screw you over when converting quarter hours to semester hours. Schools on the semester system rarely convert 4 credit hour courses to 3 credit hour courses. A 4 credit hour course is worth 2.67 credits. Schools on the quarter hour system usually require 180 or more credits for a bachelor's degree. Schools on the semester system usually require 120 or more credits for a bachelor's degree. To convert quarter hours to semester hours, divide by 1.5. In my opinion, the quarter hour system is stupid. You usually end up paying more for the same degree you could get elsewhere even when the quarter hour school charges a little less per credit.

Thank you, I was browsing through the site again and started to come to these conclusions, but it's nice to hear it from a personal account in a single place before I get started with the incorrect courses. Btw, how long did the whole process take you from completion of your last course to it appearing on your academic evaluation. (I assume mine will be slightly shorter since you already paved the way). Hopefully I get mine in time for the June graduation.

Thanks

I haven't retaken the courses for college credit yet. I took them before they were ACE-approved. Others on here have had the credits transcribed. They can probably chime in. TESC used to take 6-8 weeks to do an initial evaluation. Once enrolled, it would take them up to 2 weeks to acknowledge that they had received a transcript or test scores and another 4 to add the credits to your degree plan. Lately, TESC has been taking more than 8 weeks to do evaluations.

I took all these last month. It is a bit time consuming but for free you can't really complain too much. They are more difficult than the FEMA ones so don't go in thinking you will pass with flying colors. There is alot of material. But if you read throught it it shouldn't be too difficult. Remember you need a total of 80% cummulative in each set of courses for it to count towards credit. So even though 70% is passing according to TEEX you need higher to count for College credit.

It took about a week once I requested the credits to show up on my ACE trasnscript. Then I forwarded them over to TESC. TESC received them on 3/1/2013 and they still have not shown up on my evaluation yet. If they don't show up timely on your evaluation for graduation just let TESC know to post them. It only took a few days from ACE to TESC its just that TESC is slow to process.

If you don't mind me asking what were your other CIS electives? I will be done soon and will be short 1cr for CIS and need to get something so if you don't mind sharing that would be great.

for BSBA, CIS

I took C Programming through TESC and Systems Analysis & Design through DePaul(original undergrad) for my primary CIS courses

Electives were
DSST - Management Information Systems
Local Community College - Intro to ERP Systems (SAP)
DePaul - Applied Networks & Security
DePaul - Intro to Desktop Databases

and now one of the 2 TEEX Cyber Security Courses for my final electives, since the DePaul ones are 2.67 credits only

I also took the CLEP CIS which counts for Intro to CIS in Business Requirements.

So I started the TEEX Cyber Security courses this morning, I guess I should have intentionally failed the pretest. I scored 65-70 of most of the sections which only allowed me to retest on the failed sections so even though I aced those I ended up with a 71, 74, & an 82 for the three classes I started. So I have requested that they reset them for me. So I would recommend either taking your time and researching your answers on the pre-test or not answering anything and working through the module after which you will do well enough to get the 80% for ACE credit.

All that said. They are free credits and not very difficuty for anyone with some computer experience.
AMU: 39 Gen Ed credits
Military ACE credits: 24 Gen Ed/GMS/Bus/Free credits

Has anyone tried sending these 3 ACE courses to Excelsior and seeing what they transcribe as?
