The DSST exams (and CLEP exams) are both multiple choice (with some having optional essays).
You can find all of the test info on their websites: CLEP - College Level Examination Program (CLEP) -Save Time. Save Money. Take CLEP | College Board CLEP Site DSST | Get College Credit
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

CLEP, A-E, 5 choices. DSST, A-D, 4 choices. This is like getting a free 5% higher score when taking a DSST test instead of a CLEP test. Taking a CLEP blind you get 20% correct. Taking a DSST blind you get 25% correct. 5% can make the difference.
