Hello all!

I've been searching through numerous threads lately to get tips on what to use when studying for the Economics CLEPs. Having a family, full time job, and taking actual college classes at the same time preclude me from studying all the recommended materials and testing in a timely manner, so my question to you is this:

Will the InstantCert flashcards and Standard Deviant videos be enough to pass with a decent score (60's-ish)?

P.S. How long are those SD videos, by the way?

Has anyone thought of staring an active IC Alumni?

  Exam Score Questions
Posted by: homeschoolmom - 11-10-2007, 11:07 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (12)

My daughter, who is 14 and a high school freshman, studied 9th grade Biology last year. In September, she decided she'd like to take the CLEP and she began preparing for the exam using her textbook, the REA guide, and Instacert. She studied hard and by November, her REA practice test scores had improved from a scaled score of 49 to 73. Her percentage of correct answers on Instacert supported these improved scores with an average of about 70%. Yesterday, she took the exam and passed--barely--with a scaled score of 50. She said the actual test was much harder than the material presented in practice. Might anyone have insight into why she experienced such a big gap in her performance on the test compared to her practice sessions?

Also, is a pass really a pass in the eyes of a school? Since she is a couple years away from choosing a university, we have banked her score and plan to do the same with other CLEP exam scores. My concern is that a university will look at her '50' and think 'C'. She is not a 'C' student--this is her first average grade in any subject--and I don't want to communicate 'average' to prospective schools. I also don't want her to start her college career trying to bring up a 'C' average. She is hoping to be ready to take the College Algebra, Analyzing...Literature, and either Psychology or Sociology exams by the end of this school year, but now we are a concerned that these exams could hurt her more than they will help. Any thoughts?

Please Help- Upperlevel Exams And Study Guides Questions
Posted by: fcgoates - 11-10-2007, 10:30 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

Hello,
I'm new to taking DSST/EXE exams. I'm 24 hours away from graduating. Recently, my academic advisor told me that I can take DSST/EXE tests to earn upper-level elective credits which will count as electives (I can only do three of them- max). My goal is to finally be done with college by Summer 2008 and now I'm more curious to know which are (in your opinion) the easy exams and do you recommend the different study guides such as Pass Your Class guides (I have been reading about in different posts) and other ones such as the red DANTES books on sale at Amazon.com (see link). Amazon.com: DSST Drug and Alcohol Abuse (DANTES series): Books: Jack Rudman. I understand that their are PDF files and charts to study that other IC users may have. I ask that, if your wouldn't mind, please sharing your info with me. If not, please let me know which study guides are the best- so I can purchase them. I really want to meet my goal. I have studied for the MIS upperlevel DSST exam- but later found out that I need to actually take the course with my university (University of Maryland University College) so that one is a no go. I'm currently studying for the Drug and Alcohol Abuse DSST and plan to take it by year's end. I will greatly appreciate all the help anyone can give. I'll share your wealth with others online and at my workcenter (my Navy workcenter so you will be helping out many more people besides myself). Sorry for the novel and thanks for your time and help in advance.
Gary

Passed Research Methods Psych. w/only IC
Posted by: Mateo1 - 11-09-2007, 11:34 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I'm pretty happy that this one is over, I scored an A just studying from the IC cards and the sample questions from EC.
There were only a couple of things in the test that I was not familiar with, including large N and small N, how to cite somebody else's work in the reference section of a report, and maybe one or two more things, but nothing big. IC has it covered pretty well.
One thing I have to say, and I have read it from other posters, taking an EC test late in the afternoon (mine was at 4:30 pm) is pretty hard. By the time I had about 20 questions left, my head was pretty foggy. The Pearson Vue center was packed and it was really hard to get an appointment, so I went with what they had. If you have a choice, I recommend taking it as early as possible.
Next will be Adulthood and Aging or Social Psych. I have 15 more ULs to go.
Thanks everybody.
Mateo
