21 easy credits for a business student
Posted by: BLWieland - 11-28-2007, 04:11 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

I needed 21 elective credits to finish my business degree, so I decided to try and get them all through Dantes/Clep. I took these 6 tests last month and passed them all with virtually no study. I am an average student and feel that any business student could pass these without preparation. Before each exam, I reviewed the DSST prep guide for no more than 1 hour....so I guess I prepared a little, Big Grin

Intro to Business - 3 credits
Here's to Your Health - 3 credits
Ethics in America - 3 credits
Principles of Supervision - 3 credits
A & I Literature - 6 credits
Personal Finance - 3 credits

Hopefully this list helps some of you.

  Thomas Edision College vs. Excelsior
Posted by: Shadowless - 11-28-2007, 11:51 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I have been brainstorming on which college to transfer my credits too. I want to get a degree which translates into several different fields and that I could find a good job in the future with. My question is which college would you recommend? Which college takes the most credits and would be the easiest and fastest route to earn a bachelors degree with?

Do both colleges charge and arm and a leg to transfer credits? Just looking for some input from those who have been in this situation.

Thank you for your time.

How IT Certifications translate into Credits at Excelsior College
Posted by: BMWGuinness - 11-28-2007, 11:15 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

Hey everyone,

After speaking to Excelsior College, they let me know that IT Certifications can transfer into credits (both lower and upper level).

These include Microsoft Tests that are no longer in use by Microsoft (MCP NT4.0 for example)

You can go here to see what your credits can transfer to:

https://www.excelsior.edu/portal/page?_p...ema=PORTAL

Just to give you an example, I have 3 Comptia Certifications and 4 Microsoft Certifications. Comptia Transfers via the certification, and Microsoft Transfers via the Exam passed. In this case (if all certs and exams translate into credits - My Transcripts have not been cataloged at EC yet) I have 7 Upper Credits and 19 Lower Credits that translate from my Certifications.

I'll list them here with their corresponding Value

Comptia A+ - 2 Lower Credits
Comptia i-net+ - 4 Lower Credits
Comptia Network+ - 2 Upper Credits

Microsoft MCP 2.0, MCSE NT4.0, MCSE 2000, MCDBA 2000

70-028 Administering Microsoft® SQL Server 7.0 - 1 Lower Credit
70-029 Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft® SQL Server 7.0 - 1 Lower Credit
70-058 Networking Essentials - 2 Lower Credits
70-067 Implementing and Supporting NT™ Server 4.0 - 2 Lower Credits
70-068 Implementing and Supporting NT™ Server 4.0 in the Enterprise - 3 Lower Credits
70-073 Implementing and Supporting NT™ 4.0 Workstation - 2 Lower Credits
70-210 Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional - 1 Lower Credit
70-215 Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server - 1 Lower Credit
70-216 Implementing and Administering a Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Network Infrastructure - 2 Lower Credits
70-217 Implementing and Administering a Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Directory Services Infrastructure - 2 Upper Credits
70-219 Designing a Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Directory Services Infrastructure - 3 Upper Credits

I hope this is helpful for anyone who has Certifications they are looking to receive credit for, especially those over 5 years old (some colleges will not accept certifications older than 5 years).

Business Policy Course for EC advice
Posted by: jec959 - 11-28-2007, 08:19 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I am trying to decide my best course of action for Business Policy & Strategy for EC. I am going to try to have the DSST statistics test out of the way by the end of the year.

CSU Pueblo - business strategy course mgmt 485 - $417 - has anyone taken this and gotten it finished in a timely manner?
EC Business Course - $870 - Has anyone taken this if so what is it like
University Of Nebraska-Lincoln - mgmt 475 - web course for $513 - has anyone taken it if so how is the course?
TECEP Exam - which scares me by the way, as it is expensive all or nothing shot at the requirement.

This leaves me with

Business statistics - DSST - Penn Foster if I tank the test
Financial Acct - Clep Exam
Managerial Acct - Penn foster
American Litature - last 6 arts & science credit
then done if I pass the Penn Foster Retest on College Algebra anyway otherwise another course or clep.

How long of a wait for TECEP test results?
Posted by: skyfall123 - 11-28-2007, 07:32 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (15)

I just received my passing grade for my Financial Mgmt course at Penn Foster (thanks for the tip jec959), and am waiting for the results of my FINAL TWO tests...hopefully:eek:

Both tests are TECEP's that I took last week. For those who have actually tested out of the TECEP's.....How long should I be prepared to wait for the test results? Are they sent via snail mail or via email?

....and can someone please tell me why I didn't just take the Ops Mgmt course from CSU, like all you other smart people?Smile

Excelsior Lib Arts Degree (FAA A&P Credits?)
Posted by: drkjon - 11-28-2007, 12:25 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - No Replies

Hi everyone,

One more here…

I am awaiting a degree eval from Excelsior right now. I had a couple concerns I was hoping some of you already navigated through and know the answers. I wanted to get a Lib Arts Degree with depths in Aviation and Management.

For Aviation, at TESC, my FAA A&P license resulted in various UL and LL Sem Hours. EXC says they take their recommendation from ACE who sent me a transcript with a recommendation of 67 SH, but they didn’t break out UL & LL credits.

For those that applied FAA A&P to EXC did they award 300 level credits to you? Some of the credits TECS listed on my transcript are just below. I’m just trying to sort out how many UL level I can expect to receive.

1.. AVM-101... General Aeronautics...... 3.00 CR AVM-101 *NE
1.. ELE-111... Basic Electricity........ 3.00 CR ELE-111 *NE
1 TEC-131 Welding Technology 2.00 CR TEC-131 *NE
1.. AVM-331... Instruments and Avionics. 4.00 CR AVM-331 *NE
1.. AVM-322... Powerplants, Piston...... 4.00 CR AVM-322 *NE
1.. AVM-311... Airframe Sys, Advance 4.00 CR AVM-311 *NE

Any help/insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to see precedence on FAA before I get my Degree Eval back.

Thank you, E

Military credit? for EXC Lib Arts Degree
Posted by: drkjon - 11-28-2007, 12:08 AM - Forum: Military Discussion - No Replies

Hi everyone,

My last (7th) transcript just arrived at the school so they are preparing my eval.

My question is this; how has EXC used your military credits? For example did Military Studies apply to Arts and Sciences? Did EXC award any of you 300 level credit for Military Studies?

TESC also awarded 300 level credit for Leadership/Mgmt; did EXC award any of you 300 level credit?

LMM1111 Leadership/ Mgmt I 2.00 UL
LMM1112 Leadership/ Mgmt I 2.00 LL
LMM1113 Military Studies I 2.00 LL

LMM2121 Leadership/Mgmt II. 5.00 UL
LMM2122 Managerial Comm II 3.00 UL
LMM2123 Military Studies II 3.00 LL

LMM2131 Leadership Mgmt III 5.00 UL
LMM2132 Managerial Comm III...... 3.00 LL
LMM2133 Military Studies III 1.00 LL

I have over 200 sem hours with around 55 UL. I'm hoping UL Military Studies will suffice for one depth and Aviation UL credit will suffice for the other depth.

Also, I passed the Math Clep. Will that suffice for Lib Arts Math Req?

I know that schools change how they view credits and knowing precedence is always helpful. I appreciate whatever you can provide.

Thank you, E

  New here, looking for guidance/encouragement
Posted by: DocChao - 11-27-2007, 08:49 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Hey ladies and gentlemen,

I'm currently active duty in the Navy and I separate Dec of next year. I know I should have started sooner but I want to utilize my last year to CLEP as many credits as I can while its free.

Thing is, I am still limited on time and I can't afford to be studying such broad materials and go in to fail a CLEP, that would waist valuable time I don't have.

I have no post K-12 education other than what the Navy has given me, I've actually been to 2 "A schools" and multiple other courses that I have on my transcript.

With said knowledge base, How hard would it be for me to jump into CLEPs with only Instantcert as study material?

And input, especially from other servicemembers, would be appreciated.

  CLEP, DANTES, EXCELSIOR, Non-Military?
Posted by: BMWGuinness - 11-27-2007, 08:19 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

Thanks to Shotojuku for pointing me to this forum, might be exactly what I need.

I have a few questions.

If I'm non-military, can I qualify for DANTES?
Can I take the CLEP and other tests BEFORE signing up with Excelsior?
Someone mentioned Certifications will transfer, but I could not find anything on their site, can that be confirmed?

I reposted from a different forum in quotes some more information.

Quote: Best course of action?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After reading BAin4weeks, my eyes have opened to different available possibilities.

I would ask your guidance on my situation.

My best friend and I live together, and have decided we want to pursue our degrees together.

We have seperate college backgrounds.

I have completed several Community College courses and Computer Certification Experience (Comptia A+, Network+, i-net+, CIW, MCP NT4/2000, MCSE NT4/2000, MCDBA NT4, 2000)

He has completed some Community College Courses, some University Courses, and has completed 2 years at DeVry University.

I have no military background.

He is a Military Vet who was Medically Discharged.

Our background is in Computers, we are looking to complete an AA Degree or equivalent and complete a BA or BS (preferred Computers or Business)

What is the best course of action to go about completing an AA/AS and BA/BS.

Is Excelsior College the way to go?

We are not pressed for time, but would like to take 1 exam per day.

Thanks!

BMWGuinness

Thanks for taking the time to read this
