BIO307: MICROBIOLOGY
This course's exam will close on August 17, 2018. It will not be possible to obtain a certificate after that date, but the course materials will still be accessible at https://legacy.saylor.org/. If you are seeking a certificate for this course, please plan to take the exam before August 17, 2018.
Does anyone know why they are closing down this course?

They retire old courses regularly. That course wasn’t credit bearing so it’s not a big impact for our purposes here.

OK, but if somebody had taken it, are there any places they could have tried to test out of the course through?
Plus if it's on an ACE transcript, would any of the colleges have taken it in for credit for Microbiology? Just curious. TIA!

If it's not ACE approved, then it can't go on an ACE transcript. So it never would have gotten on there in the first place.
You can take a SL course for Microbiology, although that's the Saylor course, so I'm not certain how that will work after the Saylor course shuts down. They also have a lab for it that is not through Saylor. UExcel has an exam for it. Study.com has a course for it.

OK, I thought it was as it noted ACPE-0028 for the ACE course/Exam# on the alternative credit project page. I'm a newbie at this stuff so maybe that is separate from the regular ACE courses?

You're looking at a different course. Saylor's BIO307 was never credit-bearing. Straighterline's version of the Saylor course (ACPE-0028) was credit bearing, although it expired on 3/31/18. Straighterline still has a course approved through ACE, although it's going to expire on 6/30/18, and we don't know if it will be renewed after that.

Saylor being a non profit doesn't have the resources to maintain all of it's courses. So they retire the less popular ones or ones that don't fit in with their "plan"(whatever it is). I believe they are also retiring a bunch of non credit computer courses in August. If you look at their legacy site, they have over a hundred more courses that you could still study for fun if you wanted. Including most of a mechanical engineering curriculum (if only they'd have gotten THOSE ace approved).

OK, I thought they were the same material and could be used interchangeably for the ACE credit, but I guess that's apparently not the case now. Thanks again for clarifying that!

I didn't use the Saylor material for the SL course. It was pointless since the exam answers could be found in the required textbook.

OMG! So many courses that look interesting in the legacy area...
