UMPI
Sometimes it is a bit hard to understand how schools work with so many different credits being transferred in and the request for Double Major or Two Degrees, etc. I think there is always a chance to have things mixed up one way or another as most schools require at least 24-30 credits in a second Major for the Bachelors, there are some majors that require 45 or more!

Does anyone have experience with multiple accounting courses at UMPI. I am looking into their BA in Accounting program.

1. Level of difficulty for the accounting courses?

2. Time commitment to study and pass each accounting course?

3. Grading level for the accounting courses?

Let me know.

btw: Everyone has been a very big help, thank you.

There's no way to say yes the accounting courses are hard or easy. Everyone has different abilities and different experience. Same with the amount of time it takes you to complete the course and the Final Assessment. Ashkir and I have taken a few of the same classes this term. One class took me a week to get through and it took him a day or two. He had his Final Assessment written and submitted before I finished the course content. We all move at different paces. No idea what you mean by grading level. You must earn a minimum of an 80 to pass each course.

Thanks for replying. Yes, everyone is different with their abilities, totally agree. I am trying to create a general consensus.

1. When I ask about level of difficulty, I am referring to comparing against straighterline and study.com accounting courses, or even WGU.
2. Grading level, I am referring to fairness of grading for the papers.

I have a few follow up questions.

3. What is the learning style of the courses; example: watch short videos, live instructor, read text and writer papers and take exam?
4. If I want to reach out to the school, should I just go through enrollment or is there a recommended person I should contact? I believe someone mentioned enrollment is through a sales company in a different state or something like that.

ss20ts is absolutely correct here. I've submitted a draft for a single accounting final. It was straightforward. I however only had to take 1 lower level accounting course. So I can't answer about the classes I don't take.

Keep in mind, I am a very experienced industry individual. I'm able to accelerate because this is competency-based. I took Six Sigma belt classes at work. I was sent to learn Leadership from Ritz Carlton by my work, etc. Industry experience means a lot. I am very talented in my field, and I have access to amazing resources and very accomplished executives, if I get stuck on something I can ask them real quick hey can you explain what IRR means like I'm five?

UMPI's content is super, super, self-contained like Sophia. Imagine like 3x of one Sophia.org course together. The average course has something like 50k words. It takes 3 hours to read 50,000 words. I read for about 1 hour before I start work, 10 minutes during a break at work, 30 minutes while I eat lunch, and 2 hours after work. That's enough time to read through everything. I usually download the assessment (final assessment) before I start reading and I answer the questions on the assessment in Word as I read through the content. I read and retain things very well. Especially since a majority of the classes I've taken so far is review. I was offered a chance to PLA it, but I still would've had to do the same amount of classes basically to graduate, so it's just less hassle doing the classes versus PLA.

If I don't feel like dry content, I'll usually watch YouTube videos with captions explaining concepts. Every single class I've been in so far, has YouTube videos, TED talks, etc, that explain what was written.

UMPI staff want you to succeed. They're not like TESU that ignore you after you pay big $$$. Or the University of Phoenix where you have to do the group projects on your own because the other classmates won't help. UMPI is very much about self-motivation.

I can't compare anything to StraighterLine or Study because I didn't take their courses. I wouldn't have taken Financial Accounting from them and then taken Financial Accounting from UMPI. Can't compare to WGU as I never attended WGU.

I feel that the grading is fair. Others may not feel that way. Again this is a personal belief.

The course content is similar to Sophia. You have reading material, website and article links, and videos to watch. There are ungraded quizzes and the Final Assessment which is the basis for your grade for the course.

You can call the number on the website or fill out the form online and someone will contact you. It's usually enrollment services. It's really difficult to speak to anyone at most colleges until you've at least applied. Enrollment and admissions is the sales portion of the college at every college.

Thank god there are no group projects! Those things suck in person. I can't even imagine trying to do one online. WGU requires a group project for one of their master's degrees. I can't remember if it's the MBA or MAOL. But man people complain online about it.

Proctoring Notes Side note about Proctoring (this is a blunt statement, not targeted toward you but anyone wanting to know about it, I can't find a way to say it nicely but I'm not being mean I'm just stating it plain and simply). But, if people here keep asking UMPI multiple times a day is there a proctor, they're probably gonna add it. The rumor mill on a FB group I am in says Sophia is going to be adding camera proctoring soon too. Asking a school if there is a proctor infers that you are trying to cheat. Keep asking, you're gonna get a proctor and get your work looked at. Let alone by asking if they have a proctor means they're probably gonna look a hell of a lot closer at your classwork... Integrity is super important to schools.

First of all HogwartsSchool, I wish your school was real. Screw these degrees lets learn magic! Also the above statement isn't directed at you, but it was something I felt needed to be said. I'm getting so many PMs etc about it.

Many of us at UMPI did pretty much Sophia to UMPI and skipped study.com. Most of us most likely didn't try anything at WGU because that's an expensive way to get some credits. I tried a class at Straighterline, Straighterline is very dry, it's bad, very dependent upon a text book, and the questions of the quiz did not relate to the content, I tried this several years ago and gave up getting a degree, until I found Sophia mid-last year. It's why I choose UMPI because the Sophia format worked for me.

Depends on the professor. The rubric is super straightforward. The assignment is super detailed with a series of steps, quizzes, etc. They basically hand you the outline and tell you to write an essay.

The answer to this is buried in the thread and it's gotten rather large. so I'll put the answer here. The closest is Sophia.org. Imagine the Text Tutorials for each module, plus 2-3 videos explaining the text. like 80% of the classes are an essay at the end, the other 20% are either a multiple-choice (closed book) exam or project. The exams are on the honor system, not proctored. Every single class has Milesones where you have to write about 2+ paragraphs explaining what you learned in your own words and you get graded on it. The grade doesn't count against you but you must pass it in order to take the exam.

No. Their enrollment is not through a sales company, whomever said that clearly doesn't understand UMPI. Their enrollment staff is all 100% employed by the university at the University's location. You can even Google for the salaries of their employees. All public government schools must disclose salaries to public, and this also includes UMPI which is a state school. Fill out the form on their website at online.umpi.edu. They will contact you. They will give you a free assessment of your prior learning etc and show you what you need to do.

Most classes are papers/projects. I've had several courses where the professor sends a series of questions via email and I have to respond to them and then they send back more questions. I've had Zoom meetings to discuss my projects with a few professors. Every course has an actual professor. The professors are the same who teach on campus. This is different than WGU who has CIs and not a professor for each course.

I think they misunderstood what I said. My enrollment counselor was not an UMPI employee. He wasn't on the staff list either. He was on Long Island in New York. The enrollment and admissions department at every college function as the college's sales department. This is true of EVERY college. They want you to enroll in their school. They want your $$$. Colleges are a business. Businesses are in business to make money.
wow! When I filled out the form to apply the first person to contact me was shea!

I was hoping somebody else on here had experience with accounting courses beyond financial/managerial. I am enrolled in the BABA Accounting concentration, but I haven’t completed an accounting class yet at UMPI (I had taken financial, managerial, tax, Intermediate I and II, payroll, and cost elsewhere). I am taking auditing now, actually working on my final project tonight, which is detailed but seems reasonable for a higher-level class that builds on a lot of prior knowledge. Auditing hasn’t been bad at all, it feels like there is more discussion of auditing practices and procedures (controls, forms of audit, etc) and less of the “numbers” side of auditing that I expected coming into it. Having not taken auditing elsewhere, I cannot tell you how it compares to classes elsewhere.
Master of Accountancy (taxation concentration), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.
Master of Business Administration (financial planning specialization), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.

BA, UMPI.  Accounting major; Business Administration major/Management & Leadership concentration.  Awarded Dec. 2021.

In-person/B&M: BA (history, archaeology)
In-person/B&M: MA (American history)

Sophia: 15 courses (42hrs)

I was very far into the admissions process when I was emailed by Shea. They already had some transcripts and needed to confirm others were being sent. I worked with John who is an enrollment counselor. He called me the day I requested info on the website. He's in Long Island which I thought was odd, but hey what do I know. LOL
