general classes below. My plan is to take these classes that I can take at Umpi. I know I could get a degree done faster but I want to make sure these classes aren't having to be redone.

Introduction to Biology* 3 Microbiology with Lab* 4 Human Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab* 4 Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab* 4 Introduction to Chemistry* 3 Nutrition* 3 Statistics* 3 Developmental Psychology* 3. I am so new to degree planning so, please excuse me.

Thanks for the warnings. I will look into Human Anatomy & Physiology classes around me just in case.
Yeah, these are all standard pre and co-reqs for nursing. You could get a degree in psych and fulfill some of these like STATS and Psych but the others not so much.

I guess I am still confused, are you doing a standard BSN (no previous degree) or an accelerated BSN (previous degree)? If it's the former, you can take all of these at a CC or online BM school and be good to go for applying.

I will be using the degree I earn at Umpi so accelerated BSN (previous degree). Here info from admissions.
The program consists of 62 general education credit hours and 60 nursing credit hours. All applicants must have a cumulative GPA of a 2.75 to be considered for admissions. I have attached an image of the program information.

Gotcha, it was a little hard to find but I see the 17 month accelerated track. Makes sense that you want to shave off 7 months.

Accelerated programs are usually more competitive with many second career types applying , so definitely work hard on those pre and co reqs.

I would plan to do all your nonscience gen eds through Sophia and take your SCIENCE pre/co reqs at a CC. Do psych at UMPI then apply for the accelerated BSN program

Cool... It's great you're providing some extra details, but for most people who don't know what institution you're going to and what their requirements are, or if they take ACE/NCCRS credits, nor know your budget, study habits, etc. It's relatively hard to provide you anything more than you already know. I suggest following Duneranger's steps of doing the UMPI BA Psych, but taking the science courses through your community college in that state (I don't know which state that is yet).

With your requirements completed... Apply to the accelerated BSN program then. Good luck, have fun... If you happen to provide us more details, there may be better workarounds to go through, such as taking the sciences and placing it into your BA Psych so you can shave off a year, but again, without much details it's like this person, I had to merge their threads to help them get more responses: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...IS-MIS-ITM

Thank you, it’s an accelerated BSN Caylor School of Nursing in Florida it’s a 17 month program! The sheet I attached is the only things they need for you to apply. It’s promising to me because the school is attached to a hospital I picked psychology because It always interested me. My Budget for everything pre nursing is 20,000 max. I’m honestly trying not to get that close but if I have to that is the max I can go. My study habits are ok! I have a lot of free time at work to knock out ACE credits quickly. If don’t understand something I will research it until I understand. I don’t have any college credits to bring over I will be a first generation graduate. I did ask about about bringing in credits and the response was “ You can use credits for a few classes but I wouldn’t suggest it. We accept submissions for transfer coursework form other accredited institutions with a grade of "C" or higher.”

Hmm, after going back and forth, UMPI may or may not be your best option due to the practicum required.  Just like their CJ degree, I don't think anyone on the board or the sister board has completed a practicum requirement, so we don't know the full scope of what is required.  My suggestion is to dig deep into either continuing with your first choice the UMPI BA Psych (add the AALS with science concentration, forget it, the degree will be complete when you do all the sciences at the community college and the BA Psych requirements) or going for the TESU BA Psych without a practicum (add the AS Biology, forget it, and the same sentence as above).

Basically, If you look carefully at the requirements for the entry to the degree, you need several sciences, Bio, Chem, etc.  You need to complete these from a community college as the alternative credits are not graded.  You want to maybe bundle them together, such as taking Bio I & Chem I, Bio II & Chem II, A&PI + Microbiology, then A&P II and another course.  You want to limit the alternative credits for transfer, so decide on TESU (30 electives, can all be your sciences) vs UMPI (35 elective credits, same thing)... For reference to the requirements, here's the LMU BSN Link: https://www.lmunet.edu/caylor-school-of-...bsn-option

My goal is to use this Psychology Degree to enter a nursing school in my town that doesn't use an entrance exam. It took me like 2 hours to figure it out. Only thing is I think I need to take Anatomy & Physiology I&II and Statistics UMPI. They require quite a few other prereqs that will be completed through the psychology degree.

Are you talking about an accelerated BSN? You do not need a psych degree to get into nursing school. Nurses generally only take 2 psych classes (Intro and Developmental) plus STATS , so it doesn't really make sense to pursue a psych degree. It's just a deviation.

UMPI doesn't have anatomy and physiology for yourpace. Also, many nursing schools REQUIRE Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 WITH lab (meaning in person not online). I recommend taking these at a local CC. Sophia will NOT be adequate, I promise you. The majority of nursing programs will not take ACE credits.

I highly doubt they will. I have been on nursing school admissions teams before and they are generally picky (given that many A and P classes are highly rigorous.) These are considered the "Cut Courses" and one large factor when gauging admission.

There are no shortcuts here. They know it's not fair when someone can breeze through Sophia AP 1 and 2 in a couple of days versus 2 trad semesters of in-depth AP with intense timed exams and cadaver labs/practicals (and hundreds of hours of studying).

I transferred my SL sciences into a nursing school. Union County College in NJ takes SL, and so does Ocean County College. Thomas Edison School of Nursing does too. Although, TESU Nursing program preferers SL sciences over Sophia.
I've taken "butt in seat" sciences and SL sciences; SL courses are BETTER in many ways and most times more rigorous and more thoroughly review the subject matter content. The lab kits are fantastic too. I would say, even if your school does not take SL credits, it would not be a waste of time to take a SL course prior to taking the class your institution wants you to take. You will go into the course 100% prepared. Covid has changed everything, and schools are discovering that just because someone takes a course online doesn't mean they're not capable of academic rigor. It doesn't mean we're cheating; it doesn't mean we "breezed through." All those assumptions are unfair. In fact, my TEAS exam score, which was in the 90s, was significantly higher than the students who took mostly "butt in seat" classes. I think the grade and the effort is about the person; not the school or where they took their classes. I switched to pre-med so I'm no longer perusing nursing at this time, but I would tell OP to be a little bit more thorough and ask your school lots of questions. You may be surprised, and you can also save yourself lots of money.

I said majority, I didn't say all. I don't have a pulse on every ADN program but I can speak for BSN programs in general. My background includes advanced nursing degrees and I have been an instructor on admissions committees. I am not just talking to talk.  You said transferred but not specifically accepted into the school so I am not quite sure what you are meaning here.

We absolutely look at where the classes were taken and the rigor involved with the admissions process. Remember you are competing, not just applying. For reference, I have taken both Sophia and SL AP and the quality/rigor doesn't compare to traditional lab/dissection anatomy. It just doesn't. I don't care about individual TEAS scores. I am just stating from an instructor's and SME's perspective,  that the SL courses are not up to par. There is no harm in taking them for some extra learning experience,  however. Now, there ARE online AP courses through BM schools with dissection kits that are far better and might be something OP has considered.

I am well aware that education has changed and schools have evolved. But evolving doesn't mean that time-intensive and rigorous material suddenly becomes easy or more digestible. Otherwise, why would we still have "butts in seat classes"? Why even have science labs or cadaver dissection? Are the on-campus pre-nursing students just fools? I mean I highly doubt most people want to take in-person multiple 100+ questions tests in front of hundreds of people, spend hours upon hours going over flashcards or experience stressful 30 second station-based lab practicals at 7am, if there is some superior go at your own pace online/low stress/minimally proctored class out there.  I have seen tons of students bust their butt with weeks of studying just to scrap by with a B in AP. At SL you can basically CTRL-F 90% of the assignments and get a 0 on the only proctored test and still pass the course...c'mon.

I am trying to set up OP for success and want them to achieve their goal. They can ask the local school about ACE credits, and critical pre-reqs, but I likely know the answer.
Your insult aside  Dodgy   - I was accepted to 2 of the schools of 3. TESU didn't have a problem with my credits, unfortunately, they had a problem with my age. I was not yet 18 at the time, so I decided I have plenty of time to take more sciences and go for an MD.

As far as "up to par," I don't agree. I would say it depends on the course, the school, the teacher, THE STUDENT. People cheat in person too; I see it all the time.

  1. OP, check the attrition rate, not just nclex pass rate for the school you're applying to. Accelerated programs will probably be harder. If you fail out, you'll be stuck for lots of money. Money that you won't be able to pay back unless u have a nurse's salary.
  2. OP, many accelerated programs want all the loan money up front, so be careful!! If you get through some clinical time and decide it's not for you, you still owe all that money!!!
  3. OP, If you can save some money on the pre-requisites, that would probably very smart. Ask YOUR school and make the arrangements with them. Remember, the dean has the final say.

Good luck. Keep us posted. I'm interested to see how things go.  Smile
