It was reported by a student that you can add a minor that isn't in the YourPace program provided you get all the credits through alt credit providers.

It is probably best to get all the credits needed for your main degree first, enroll, ask to add the minor, do all the credits, and transfer them in before your term begins.

This does open Pandora's box.

Really, then, you could get a BLS with History minor - whether you brought in any courses in History or not.  The upside here is that you don't need 2 semesters of Spanish (1 only); and the ability to actually choose which History courses you want to take, rather than taking the specific ones required for the History major.

For someone who was interested in becoming a Social Studies teacher, a BLS w/Education & History or PoliSci minors gets you something you might like.
I think the big differences are the Spanish and number of history and political science courses you take. Although it isn't clear on the website, you can pick many of your classes with the History & Political Science major as well. There is a list of requirements that does include US History I and II and World Civilization I and II (which Western Civilization does not fulfill), and your foreign language sequence, but after that the degree opens up a bit.

I don't know what the political science concentration looks like, but the history concentration is:

Political Science Course
Political Science Course
UL History Elective (US)
UL History Elective (Non-Western)
UL History Elective (Pre-Modern)
UL History Elective
UL History Elective
UL History Elective
UL History Elective
UL History Elective

For the non-western course you can choose either Arab-Israeli Conflict or Native American History and, as far as I can tell, for pre-modern you're essentially stuck with Medieval Europe. But the rest of the classes are open to you, as long as they're UL. Your choices for UL history courses include:

Early Modern Europe
Modern European History
Environmental History
Native American History
Arab-Israeli Conflict
International Relations and Modern Conflicts
Modern China
Discovering and Interpreting Local History
Oral History
The Vietnam Wars
Slavery in the United States
Films of the Cold War

I don't know what they offer to fulfill the POS courses, as I transferred in POS 101 and POS 103 from Study.com, and that took care of that. (I also transferred in two UL history courses from Study.com, but that was unintentional: I took them when planning on TESU.) Anyway, I know it's not super clear on the website, as it looks like you have to take specific classes, but you do have some choice, especially knowing you can transfer in one or two UL history courses from elsewhere and they could count toward the degree.

It's not at all clear on the website what the requirements are, and what your options are.  This is what made me ultimately decide NOT to go to UMPI when thinking about a history degree - the lack of options, the lack of knowing courses would transfer in, all of that.  Someone should probably let them know that the way they have the website set up, many will choose not to go there based on this - I can't be the only person that looks at this, and thinks thanks but no thanks.

With UMPI you need the GEC regardless of your degree.  (GEC for BLS should be same for History)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

Including the GEC + additional courses for history concentration, it looks like you would take the following via Alt credits
POS 101: American Government (IC or Study.com)
POS 211: Introduction to Political Thought (Study.com)
SPA 101: Elementary Spanish 1 (IC or Study.com)
SPA-102: Elementary Spanish 2 (Study.com)
HTY 161: U.S. History 1 (Sophia)
HTY 162: U.S. History 2 (Sophia)

These courses you take at UMPI (Must take 30 credits with UMPI)
HTY 301: Medieval Europe
HTY 454: Slavery in United States
HTY 315: Greece, Rome, and the Early Church
HTY 350: U.S. Environmental History
HTY 400: Discovering and Interpreting Local History
HTY 456: Films of the Cold War
HTY 401: Oral History
HTY 115: World Civilization 1  (could be done with CLEP or SL)
HTY 116: World Civilization 2  (could be done with CLEP or SL)
HTY 439: The Vietnam Wars
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

Modern China also fulfills the Non-Western credit. For POS a lot of the History classes are also classified as POS. The major does require Intro to Political Thought (can’t remember the class number but it is LL) which is a quick class.

Yes, I can read UMPI's website to see those courses.  And I wasn't talking about the GEC (this is my 2nd degree).

I'm talking about the fact that I don't necessarily want to take those particular courses at UMPI, and I already have some courses that might transfer in for different things, but it's not clear because they don't say what the "generic" requirements are (as wildebeest spelled out in post #21).  If I took ONU's UL Latin American History course, it's not clear that that will work in the major - because they've put in every single course already, and there's no room for it.  It's also unclear that there are additional courses available.  I'm not interested in US Environmental History really - but I would be interested in Modern European History or Arab-Israeli Conflict, which aren't on the list.

I just think UMPI needs to lay out a more generic degree requirements list ("UL History Elective (Pre-Modern)" for instance) so I can see if courses I've already taken will fit - and then they need to list ALL of the options for courses.

They probably don't list out the specifics because the degree programs are designed for you to complete all of your courses at UMPI. They way they're displayed on the YourPace website shows what you'll take at UMPI which is what the vast majority of their students do. Remember, the vast majority of their students are adult Maine residents. That's who they are catering to. This is why they offer the degrees that they offer. They are very strategic about what they offer and don't want to compete with other U of M online programs. They don't advertise like WGU and aren't going after students from all over the country like WGU.

I get that as well.  But plenty of students bring in transfer credits, so I'm not sure why they make it look like they don't in the major.  And setting up specific courses, which may not interest everyone, makes no sense.  If they would include more options, more people might be interested.

I'm not going to argue with everyone, I'm just saying that as a person who IS interested, this turned ME off.  Maybe everyone from Maine is just fine with this, who knows.  But I personally don't like some of the courses needed (or not as the case may be).

Most of their students aren't bringing in transfer credits though. If you have questions about a program, it's always a good idea to contact the university it's self and not the enrollment counseling folks.

As someone who has finished the UMPI History degree, they really do need to update the website to better reflect the requirements. I transferred the UL American and pre-modern requirements from APUS courses, but they were clear-cut equivalents (Colonial America and Medieval Europe). I did not take Environmental History, or Oral, or Local. They should list it as "Requirements plus choose the rest of the credits from this list." It is just speculation but I think the list on the website reflects more what was available when they first put the program together than anything else. Most of the classes listed are from one professor and now there are three. I also think the History major has a far smaller enrollment than the other YourPace majors which means it may not get the same level of support. There were classes where I was the only student for the term.

ETA: One of the classes they list on the website, HTY 315 Greece/Early Church, is not even offered.

So you are telling me that there are no students who have ever taken even 1 college credit applying to UMPI?  I find that hard to believe.  I know from working where I do that MOST students who come into a program HAVE taken some credits before (maybe 75% have at least 1cr).  There just aren't that many people out there who want to go to college that have never gone to CC or done something to get credits at some point in their lives.  They may not have much - I've seen plenty of people who never got past developmental-level courses in Math or English; I've seen plenty who have taken 1 or 2 courses - but very few people have NO credits at all.  Especially considering UMPI YourPace requires you to have 2 years of work experience and be 20 years old, so it's not like these are people fresh out of high school.
