TESU BA Math and CS Degree Planning
#21
That's really cool... Since you're just two classes away, you can do exactly what you mentioned above, I would go for that second major when you're so close to that end goal, especially if you wanted one or both classes on your transcript for graduate school admissions.

Which were your F and G for the BA in Math?

I'll add a few more updates to this as I think that I have now figured out how things transferred in.  Most of the courses came in as MAT-4999.  However, I got MAT 3610 as 2.67 credits which is cool.  You can also see MAT 2700 as well from study.com.  The MAT4999 courses are the following: A graduate course on number theory, 2 graduate courses on how to teach mathematics, and an upper division course on teaching geometry.  The teaching geometry course came from the same school where I got the MAT 3610 credit.  It was a two course sequence.  So it seems that they transferred one of them in as MAT 3610 and the other in as MAT 4999.  Interestingly, I had another math class come in as an education class.  It was titled teaching mathematics though; whereas the others did not mention teaching in the title.

For area G, I have a bunch of random courses that I have taken over the past 20 years.  My original degree was in geology in the 90s.  That led to a teaching license in the physical sciences.  I mostly taught physics as many schools where I taught did not offer earth science.  Area G is full of random physics/science courses that I took over the years. Most of the math and physics courses I took over the years was to renew my teaching license.

Funny thing, all that physics teaching seems to have made linear algebra a really easy thing.  I'm enjoying it much more than calculus III.

Thank you thornytumbleweed, these are my F and G sections for the math degree (I´m also doing BA in Math and CS):

I´m still needing to fill the first section of F. So most probably I´ll change my BSBA to something that doesn´t require TESU courses, so I could free space for at least 2 math courses (as one could be from Coopersmith: Quantitative Analysis) + plus the 2 capstones, and having one more course as needed, for my 15 credits term.

MrPanda,

This is where I got the two courses that were 2.67 semester credits each.

https://extension.ucr.edu/certificates/i...athematics

I took the courses 5 or so years ago when my old school district was covering the costs. MATH415 at UCR is what came in as MAT3610 at TESU.

I'd be really curious how they would count the linear algebra class at UCR. I have already started the one at Coopersmith, so I am not going to cough up the 600 bucks to find out. But since they counted the geometry class as 3610, they might just count linear algebra too.

On the Coopersmith linear algebra course I was relieved to see that they allow any calculator. The NSPIRE is like having a secret weapon!

I'd say that the Coopersmith Quantitative Analysis course is one of the cheapest ways to an UL MATH course. The History of Math (3010) course at TESU looks like a good option if you're going to do the 15 credit term. That's a class I would enjoy taking. Mathematical modeling (3510) looks cool too. TESU doesn't offer their UL math courses very often, so it could be tricky to get the ones you need at the same time. You can also get Stats 399 by doing the advanced SAS programming course at Coursera.

Cheers,

Tumbleweed

I don´t think that STA courses could fill that section, check: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid426789

Thanks for letting me know that maybe I won´t be able to get the necessary TESU´s Math courses at the same time.

For example, this one could be 2.67 credits and be upper level math:
https://extension.ucr.edu/course/721192
(but yes, I would need to get two different courses in order to fill one spot)
Thanks for mentioning that program, for USD$ 645 per course, it seems like a good alternative.

Yes, the Nspire was helpful in order to secure the points in questions that could be solved easily by looking at the graph in Calculus II (Straighter Line).

I wonder if you could get to 9 UL credits by doing two courses at UCR and a 4 credit UL like Methods of proof at Westcott.

I have had the Add. AOS in one of the BSBA, filled with 3 courses of 4 credits. So, it should be possible.

Hello. Thank you for this thread. It is very interesting as I am doing the math degree too and considering adding CS. I am not sure.

Can I ask you some questions about the Google Cloud Data Analytics Professional Certificate? I am having a hard time finding any information on it from anyone who's completed it.

I am mainly wondering how long it takes to complete the course. Do you recommend it?

Thank you.

(Just as an aside, nothing relevant to the reason I am posting - which is for info about the google cloud data analytics professional cert. That's what I really want to know. This is just stuff I have thought about that is relevant to your posts so I will just add it for interest, if there is any -

but I also want to add some statistics credits to my degree because they are prereqs for things I might be interested in, and I just always wanted to learn it. I have considered taking the LSE statistics microbachelors because I read that TESU has a partnership with EdX and accepts their microbachelors. I am iffy on taking courses from statistics.com unless just for my own interest, which would probably only be after I am done at TESU, mainly because any courses that I am considering from statistics.com seem to transfer in as data science courses because part of the data science degree must be completed on statistics.com. I want to have statistics courses in my transcript. I haven't confirmed that statistics.com only transfers in as data science, though. I have an appointment with an advisor tomorrow. I will ask.

https://www.tesu.edu/degrees-programs/ba...cience.php (There's also an MS degree.)

Like on the data science degree page, it says this. These are all statistics.com courses:

Developed in partnership with The Institute for Statistics Education at Statistics.com, our innovative degree will advance your skills in predictive modeling, forecasting, customer segmentation, data visualization and risk analysis. The data science area of study, including all core and elective courses, is taught online at Statistics.com.

A. Core Area of Study Courses (23 Credits)

STA-2010 Principles of Statistics 3

Predictive Analytics I- Machine Learning Tools*

Predictive Analytics II- Neural Nets and Regression*

Predictive Analytics III- Dimension Reduction, Clustering and Association Rules*

Optimization- Linear Programming*

Introduction to Network Analysis*

Forecasting Analytics

Interactive Data Visualization*

B. Area of Study Electives: Students select four of the following courses (12 Credits)
SQL- Introduction to Database Queries*

Regression Analysis*

Introduction to R Programming

Python for Analytics

Financial Risk Modeling*

Spatial Statistics with Geographic Information Systems*

Integer and Nonlinear Programming and Network Flow

Risk Simulation and Queuing*

R Programming Intermediate

*Upper-division course as designated by ACE.

When I snoop around the degrees on "my progress" I see the same courses as the ones on statistics.com listed above are labeled as DSI courses instead of with the STA prefix for statistics. I don't want there to be confusion that I did actually take statistics courses.

This is from the masters degree evaluation, but they seem to be similar in content to the statistics.com courses listed above. The BS degree info in "my progress" doesn't list the TESU equivalents, except for:

A. Area of Study 12 SH
*must earn grades of C or better

**For assistance with course selection, please contact an
Advisor.**
Complete all of the following items.  0 of 1 Completed. Hide Details
0 of 12 Credits Completed. Hide Details
Credit details for *must earn grades of C or better **For assistance with course selection, please contact an Advisor.**

Not Started COS-2060 R Programming
Not Started COS-2050 Python Programming
Not Started DSI-6010 PA1 MLT with Python
Not Started DSI-6020 PA2 Neural Nets/Rgrsn Python

On the MS page it lists these courses, which are presumably available at TESU, but they seem kind of the same as the courses available at statistics.com too. That's why I wonder if the statistics.com courses transfer in as stats courses. Really the question is what the data science BS transcript says for the statistics.com courses.

A. Programming

**DSI-5050 Programming 1: Python and DSI-5070 Programming 2:

I was considering the SAS advanced programmer cert on coursera for the UL stat course credit on paper at TESU but I'm really not interested in it at all. I might just do it because I don't know other options for stats credits on my transcript and it seems easy enough.

I would ideally take regression analysis at statistics.com, but the timing isn't great. There are a few other options with better timing that I can get in in time to graduate in June, theoretically. I would have to review stats 1 because I took it many moons ago.

I am also wondering where you got the following non-math credits:

[Image: G.jpg]I need UL credits for this section of the degree. Where is GOG-3110 available and did it take you a long time to complete? )

GOG-3110 was done with XAMK´s course: Climate Change
BUS-210 was donde with the edX SNHU microbachelor: Financial Accounting and Analysis
CIS-201 was done with Saylor´s academy MIS course.

I think there were changes with the XAMK program, so you couldn´t get it for free anymore. Verify in the XAMK thread.

@help8

I did not find the Google Certificate overly challenging. I would put it on par with the google data analytics certificate. I will say that the IBM data analytics and IBM data science certificates were better in my mind. But the cloud data analytics certificate gets you those UL courses which is really nice.

I briefly looked at the statistics.com courses; however, I could never get a straight answer about what they would count for. However, as I look ahead to graduate programs for next year, I have been considering an applied statistics masters degree.
