TESU BA Math and CS Degree Planning - thornytumbleweed - 09-11-2024
Hello everyone. I've been a long time lurker and am finally getting my act together to pursue something that I have wanted to do for a long time. Specifically to get a math/CS degree.
I've attached a .pdf with an outline of what what I currently have planned.
Some background first though. I have a BS in geology from the 1990s. It is from an RA state university in California. I also have well over 100 credits from a couple of California community colleges. Because of this, I am not worried about fulfilling the general education requirements. If something does come up, I know that there are a lot of resources here to determine what to CLEP or do for any GE requirements.
I have the following Math Courses
College Algebra
Trigonometry
PreCalculus
Calulus I, II
Non-linear Algebra
Number Theory
Statistics
Tests and Measurements
A few (9 credits) UL Math Education classes from when I thought about being a math teacher.
I plan to take the following
Linear Algebra
Calculus III
Discrete Math
I am curious about being able to take statistics classes at statistics.com and apply them for the math major. Can this be done? Or are they only for the data science majors. I am specifically interested in things like multivariate statistics, regression analysis and several other courses there. Is there a list for what classes at statistics.com transfer to at TESU?
I have several CS credits that are quite old in Fortran and BASIC. I doubt that these are valuable anymore. More recently I have done the following
Python Programing
SQL
Intro to databases
Intro to analytics
I plan to take mostly study.com courses to manage my budget for the remainder of the CS courses as detailed on the wiki at https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sample_TESU_BA_Computer_Science_Plan
I have also completed two ACE accredited certificates on Coursera that give credit at TESU according to the wiki at https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Coursera
What I am curious about is how two majors works at TESU. Specifically CS and Math. Both courses indicate that you can include natural science, math, and computer science as electives. How many of these electives can overlap between math and CS? Do they count anything from my first degree?
A few final thoughts. I am semi-retired and this is a passion project that doesn't have a large budget. I have seriously thought about getting a masters in statistics when I fully reach retirement age. It'd be fun to teach statistics at a community college in retirement! Getting the BA in math and CS would enable me to pursue an MS in statistics.

Just an update as it seems that this is a template that is preferred.

What kind of degree?: Bachelor
Budget: $5-10k
Commitments: i can give 4+ hours/day
Dedicated time to study: mostly weekdays, some weekends
Timeline: 1 year or so
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: N/A
Goal?: This is a goal of mine. Not really for career enhancement. Maybe for entry into an MS Statistics at retirement.

Your best bet is to apply and find out how the credits transfer in.

any of these statistics.com courses should be transferable to TESU, but whether they/which ones transfer into the math major, you would have to check:

I would try to get confirmation regarding the STAT courses, as any of my STAT courses went into Part F. AOS Electives
I have UL STAT, but it didn´t fill any spot there.

Welcome to the board, you just need the 'major' requirements, and the info you have is pretty well planned. Stat classes should be usable for the BA Math and the BA CS (electives area). Apply to TESU, get your transcripts evaluated, and see where you stand, then complete the spreadsheet with any updates. You may want to do the Coursera and other classes for transfer credit beforehand to see the remaining classes left...

Going forward, I am going to follow some the advice here. I like jg_nuy's advice to do the TECEP which will cost me 52 bucks. That seems reasonable. Before I do that though, I am going to finish up the few courses I have at Coursera and do a bunch of study.com computer science stuff. Thank you bjcheung for that suggestion. I expect that coursera and study.com will take a few months.

TESU accepts credits after enrollment and all the way to graduation, so it is a good idea to lock in the catalog, just in case they make changes down the line.

Also, there is the possibility that you might be eligible for a Tecep scholarship after you apply. I don't know how they select candidates for that scholarship, or if it's just offered you everyone depending on how many funds they have, but often people who have recently applied get an offer to have their first tecep paid for by scholarship. This offer usually comes within the first few weeks after application, from what I understand. If that's the case, you can select any tecep, you don't have to do them medical terminology one just to save money.

Yes, just get your credits evaluated.
I went ahead with Study.com, Coursera, etc. first, because I knew that I didn´t have computer science credits, but you could have something that could work there.
