TESU ASNSM in Mathematics Add-On for BA in Computer Science

I think cornerstone comes from TES-100, the previous 1-credit class that students were required to take before SOS-110(0) was a thing. I think the equivalent classes at COSC and Excelsior are also called cornerstones, so it's no wonder the name has stuck.

I knew there had to be a reason but I could find nothing on their site that answered that. Thanks for this.

Can I ask why anyone would want an associates in math if they're getting a BACS? Especially if math is not their strong suit.

I can't say why anyone would want it but for me it's because I noticed I was going to have the requirements met (or almost met) owing to how many extra math classes I am planning to take. And if I understand the wiki correctly I can get said degree with no extra work or fees. My thinking is twofold. First, if I decide to go on to a Master's program I figure more is better in the eyes of academics. Second, I've spoken to more than a few recruiters who have said they could submit me for more jobs if I had a bachelor of science. When pressed they said a bachelor of arts was unlikely to hamstring me for the jobs I want. But knowing this I thought maybe an associates of science could help check more boxes.

There are some employers who would value extra math. The extra math in an associate's isn't really significant but having it might still help a tiny bit. Of course, the TESU BACS is already a little light on math, but most people reading your resume wouldn't know that. I remember being surprised by that.

I had gone to CC way back when intending to transfer to a CS program, and so had done PreCalc, Calc I, II, III, Diff Equations, and besides Calc I, it was not helpful at TESU. (Diff Equ would have helped except that I had taken it at a CC and it therefore didn't count as UL.)

Having an Associate in Math can help make your resume pass more automatic screenings, at least in some cases. I can see why some people would want it, especially if you're already planning on taking most of the math anyway. Aside from the extra math, it doesn't cost anything to BACS students. So, hey, why not?

I was told by TESU that the edx information literacy course only applies to the BACS degree -- not to the BA mathematics
so i wonder what would happen if you took the edx course for the BACS degree and then tried to slide the AS in math in there

For me, it was just a matter of taking the College Mathematics CLEP through Modern States, which was kind of a fun experience. I get a kick out of saying I have a degree in Math, so for $0, why not?

This is similar to the waived requirements for a previous degree. TESU waived the BACS cornerstone/gen eds/electives specifically because of my WGU BSCC, and they waived the ASNSMM cornerstone/gen eds/electives specifically because of my Pierpont AASBOG. At least that's how it was noted on my degree plans, and my advisor called attention to it so that I wouldn't miss it. So there seems to be more scrutiny for add-on associate's degree requirements than maybe there has been in the past.

Since you only have to take the cornerstone once at TESU no matter how many degrees you have/are getting, it should still work.
Now, if for some crazy reason you are planning on taking the edX course for the BACS, and they say you HAVE to take the actual TESU course for the AS, then you should certainly not get the AS.  But I have a feeling you'll be fine.

Is the idea here that the associate's degree plan should be added first, then the cornerstone will be satisfied by transferring from edX? I can see that strategy working because the advising team shouldn't be able to remove the course credit if the transfer evaluation team adds it. And the evaluators seem to make plenty of mistakes, so your overall chances are pretty good.

TES-1000: Cornerstone (no longer offered as of June 30, 2019). In regards to the cornerstone, it was only available for a few months before they switched to the newer course: https://www.tesu.edu/academics/courses/2016-and-after

For those who want to do an Associates or certificate, if you're getting it free without any extra energy, money, time, that's when I would recommend getting the associates or certificate.  Examples are Associates/Certs at TESU or AALS at UMPI, or a COSC AA/AS on route to the Bachelors... Having said that, for those going to Excelsior University, I would skip the associates as you need to pay for an extra associates capstone!

Easy, email academic advising and ask them to 'add an associates program' to your degree list... voila!
It's best to add that early, it doesn't matter when really though... Add it whenever you get the chance.
