Search of: music therapy - List Results - ClinicalTrials.gov
NAP, thanks taking the time for this link. It's quite interesting that my son did find the listed completed trials with results in his search for studies. But when he reviewed the papers, this level of detail was not included. Did you notice how old a lot of these trials are and how many have not reported results? This is what my son noticed when he researched for studies in pubmed.gov and Cochrane summaries. Out of 61 papers, only 2 could be interpreted as declaring that their results were significant enough to recommend the study treatments for clinical practice. This is where he came up with the idea that this could be a very useful line of endeavor. Regarding statistics at TxA&M: Are you in their program? For the non-calculus based applied stats certificate in Applied Statistics the only pre-req I found was MATH 102 Algebra which is a TE for CLEP College Algebra. Is this really enough? What if he did the ALEKS Behavior Stats instead? Seems to me like this would get him better prepared and find out if he really liked the subject well enough to go on. With the ALEKS prep he would get all the math background for he needed for non-calculus based experimental design, no?

I don't know what the normal percentage is for completed and published studies. This could be typical or it could be a sign of other issues, like needing more members of the team, such as a biostatistician (master's degree or doctorate), who could help with setting it up properly, evaluate the results, and give credibility to the study that would help with getting it published. I am sure the individual courses and certificates have utility, especially for team members who have other specialties to contribute, but I do not know if that can be used to actually replace a biostatistician.
Again, I would hope that someone working in this area could help with these questions and issues and help him clearly define his goals and the steps he needs to achieve them. I assume that setting the goal and planning backwards with someone who has expereince would help make the path as efficient as possible.
Yes, I thought ALEKS Intro to Stats was a good way for me to see if this subject was interesting enough to me to pursue further. I left feedback about it in my signature. I recommend that he sees as much of the material (close to 95-100%) as possible, even if he doesn't test that high. (I may be misunderstanding your comment here - It is exposure to the math involved, but I doubt that it is enough to apply it to a study without more training.)
Yes, I completed the prerequisites and have been accepted into the master's degree program. (I trust them that the prerequisites are enough, so he may need a graded course in Algebra, but I have not taken a course that tests the level of the prerequisites, yet.) I am just starting the second month of the first class STAT604 - so far so good!
I can't wait to see how this all works out for him!

You are all correct. LDAS is definitely not the way to go. After further study, my son will eventually sit for the Board Certification for Music Therapy (MT-BC) With his current TESC BA Music degree and instrument skill set, I believe he will be able to get at least part time work at a Rec Center or Rest Home. While adding to his proficiency in Voice, he will have to finish his Piano and Guitar proficiencies. At the same time he needs the following courses before applying for the Queens' U. MT Certificate Program: Anatomy and Physiology 4hr; Psych Intro (done); Psych Human Growth and Development; Abnormal Psychology. His target school only takes CLEP. With his ADD and full time work to support his family, he is really better off with independent study. CLEP seems obvious for Human Growth. Don't know if Queens will take ECE Abnormal yet. BYU has a nice 3hr course in Anatomy but physiology seems to be missing. Any other ideas?
