TESC Is No Longer Accepting Community College Credits As Upper Level?? (Need advice)

Ladyplf Wrote:Looks like Thomas Edison is really trying to make it harder to get a degree. I wonder what their plans are for the future; they just made a huge land deal in Trenton possibly for brick and mortar classes and they have the new general education degree requirements. Who knows what new changes may be coming down the pike next? Maybe almost being absorbed by Rutgers pushed them to raise their academic standards.

Sorry for being entirely selfish in this response, but I wonder if this will enhance the degrees already earned? That is if TESC improves its name-recognition and is seen in a favorable light academically by more folks, perhaps the "blank stare" I've gotten when employers come across the degree on my rÃsumà will go away. It hasn't hurt my prospects that I know of they just are ignorant of the school.

kurlovich Wrote:Well, I got a reply. No one here is going to like it. I sent them this last week:

"I've been told that TESC will not accept community college transfers for upper level credit. I'd like to know
what your official policy is on this.

Please provide me with a link to the written policy (catalog or website) and/or documentation detailing it."

And got this in return:

"That is correct, as of January 2013 community college courses do not transfer in as upper level credit.

Our records show that you...did not enroll until May 2013. Since...the requirements changed in January 2013, you
have to follow those requirements.
If you have any further questions you may contact the School of Business and
Management at sbt@tesc.edu or 609-984-1130."

Look out everyone, TESC is now implementing by a policy that they never publicly published and that no one here knows
anything about.

Gotta say, it really pi**es me off that they decided to pull this double standard with me. BIPolarGuy's post clearly shows
that they were giving UL CC credit after January 1st (thanks for the post BIPolar). Needless to say, I'm going to fight them
on this.

Also, this is something that should be stickied or on the Wiki, so more people aren't duped like I was.

I spoke with my advisor this morning to finish up and make sure I'm all good for dec graduation. All of my cc classes were transcribed as expected with the cc going to ul where appropriate.

So, my guess as to your issue, you applied in July and the 6 months ran out. Your may enrollment forced you into the new catalog. If they were the problem with the delay, try to protest it. I hope it works out for you.

This might have something to do with accreditation like NAP said. I doubt the new general education requirements will help improve TESC's name recognition. They require less math/science courses and can still be tested out of. Not accepting CC credits as UL credits hasn't helped COSC or EC with better reputations, so it's not going to do anything for TESC. The only ways I can see that these schools can make themselves look more prestigious is by having selective admissions, professors with PhDs, more graduate programs, and residency requirements. I think TESC will be able to build a good reputation in nursing because of the brick and mortar programs it has. It has already managed to become ranked among traditional colleges. My guess is that the additions to their campus will be for nursing.

Hold up... does this mean that TESC isn't currently accredited until the reaccreditation is completed? And does it seem odd to anyone else that they haven't released their 2013 - 2014 catalog yet?

Every school goes through reaccreditation. Each of the big three schools are regionally accredited and show no indication of that changing. It's just a renewal process that each member school completes.

That link that was given a few posts back was from 2011. TESC was last reaccredited in 2012. See this link for the details:
Middle States Commission on Higher Education

As for the catalog, it seems like it always gets released late (it was last year). Just like they haven't updated the degree planning guide for the new requirements, it just takes time.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Thank you cooperalex2004, especially for the link.

cooperalex2004 Wrote:[quote=LaterBloomer]If you search, "transfer credits" on the tesc.edu website, you will find the following:

That policy is for people who have taught in a college so it doesn't apply to transfer credit. That sounds like a great deal for instructors though! .

I just wanted to add that I got 27 credits this way (why I picked TESC) and I think Marianne did too. Either one of us can answer questions about that opportunity, but Cooper is right, it has nothing to do with transfer credit.

Anyone know how this will effect CLEP/DANTES tests? I believe a few of them counted towards UL credit before. Will that still be the case?

Exams are not community college credit, so it won't change anything. Smile

I'm probably over-worrying about this being a problem. I was estimating being able to transfer in a large number of credits (possibly over 100), & using just CLEP/DSST to finish up. Most of the tests are LL though, not UL... which is why I am worrying about this. I don't have a lot of UL coursework, because various school have required me to repeat what are really the same courses (i.e. life drawing) multiple times - thinking their course was somehow different from the last school's. So I'm behind in UL credits.
