Hi,
Does anyone know if the essay or memo-writing portion of the DSST Tech Writing exam is optional? I am planning on enrolling in TESC and pursuing a degree in English; I know that I need to take English Comp with the essay, but I really hope that the Tech Writing exam will be completely multiple choice.
Any comments or tips would be great. I have checked out the feedback site and it has helped.
Thanks!

Don't do the essay, TESC does not use it and it will clog up your timeline. The exam is multiple choice, and that is all that is necessary.

I agree, the exam is straight forward multiple choice. Don't bust your brain on the last question/essay portion.
Good luck,

Yeah, and beyond that, you won't get your score because it will have to be sent away for grading- that can add a month or more to the process for nothing.

So how does it work? Is the essay question on the computer test and you just skip it? Then the score doesn't factor in that component of the exam? My school lists it as an exam you can get credit for but there is no mention of an essay. Do I have to get their approval to take only the multiple choice section of the exam? I am taking this next and there has been an issue at my test center both times I have taken exams. I don't want to start this one at a disadvantage, also.
Thanks.

My version was the paper test, so I'm not sure where exactly the essay question will be. You need to check with your school to see if they require it. I know for sure TESC does not, so if TESC is your school, just skip it.

The one I took was the computer version. It was 101 questions all multiple choice except for the last one which is the essay question. I had to write a memo on a certain topic to request some kind of training. I went ahead and did it even though I didn't have to. Your score will be given right after you finish the test if you decide to do it or not.
Good luck,
