Don't worry about memorizing specific/exact dates. I have taken many DANTES and CLEP exams (including quite a few history exams). There has been no case where knowledge of exact dates has been required. Having said that, you will sometimes need to have an overview in your mind of the timeline for particular subjects.
As far as I can remember though, this was NOT the case for Fundamentals of Counseling. I don't recall being asked even a general question about timeframes.
