Sophia Chemistry with Lab
#1
Has anyone successfully had the Chemistry with Lab from Sophia fill the Gen Ed 3C and 3E requirements yet.  I transferred it in and on Mainestreet transfer credits it is showing as 3D and 3E meaning I would still need to take a biology before I start at UMPI which would suck since I'm lined up to start in Spring II term.  I'm trying to finish up two SDC classes at the moment before the application cut off date.

I'd read somewhere that they perform a degree audit so it's possible that I may have to wait for that???

Chemistry does not fill the biology requirement, no matter where it's from. UMPI students need BOTH a physical science and a biological science. One of those need to be a lab. Take Human Biology from Sophia (without the lab) and you'll be good to go.

You mean Sophia : (Chemistry) + (Chemistry lab) and (Human Biology) will meet UMPI science requirement?

Yes, exactly. Either chemistry + lab and Human Biology OR Human Biology + Lab AND Environmental Science or Chemistry (no lab). Since you already have Chemistry + Lab, you just need Human Biology without lab.

Rachel, thank you for the information. That is helpful. In the future, you all should definitely put a disclaimer under the "don't take SDC Bio with lab, take chemistry with lab at Sophia" posts that informs people they still need to take biology of some sort. I totally screwed that one up and wasted time taking Environmental Science at Sophia lol.

Oh well! Live and learn. On a positive note, I can confirm that the lab portion of Chemistry 100% fills the lab requirement at UMPI.

@joshua27, a learning opportunity is never a screw up, you've gained some Enviro Science basics or know-how and those should have been easier credits too... Unless that course took your over the month subscription, I think it's still a good ROI/Value to have extra courses that may potentially help in your current or future career.

Agreed! The extra course is easy extra elective credits!

It was easy extra elective credit for sure but I didn't actually need it.  I was already very familiar with the material and finished that course in literally a day.  That said, I spoke to Jessica today and my transfer audit was completed, other than a Biology class from Sophia, I was able to meet all criteria and only have to take 10 classes at UMPI to graduate.  I have 4 core business classes, 5 classes in my Supply Chain concentration and then American Government.

I wish I had already taken the BIO class primarily because I was trying to see how cheaply I could complete my degree, now it will cost me an extra $100 bucks because I didn't read carefully enough.  Still a very good price per credit hour.  On a side note, Jessica is phenomenal.  I would recommend UMPI to anyone simply based off my initial interaction with her.

If one takes Human Biology with Lab then they will fill 3C and 3E. They would still need Environmental Science or Intro to Chem from Sophia. UMPI has 3 science requirements - a biological science, an environmental/physical science, and a lab science. You only need 2 science classes if 1 has a lab. You can take either Human Bio with lab or Intro to Chem with lab. You'll still need another science course.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've fixed that post with the most up-to-date information.
