I've never thought of that CLEP. Thanks for the idea; we'll check it out. Since he's only taken the first half of each of these, does it matter as far as content goes? He hasn't studied W. Civ. II or US Hist. II. He is planning on doing the Gov. CLEP in a couple of months, so that might be some overlap as well.

The general REA book literally has everything he needs. The nature of those exams is so general that he would probably be fine. That said, I just read you said he might take govt next, so he might as well wait on SS&H. The more "subjects" he takes inside social science, the less trouble the general social science exam presents. I took mine last and it was a piece of cake.
Subjects inside the SS&H exam:

(first 50%)
US History
Western Civ/World History
(second 50%)
Psychology
Sociology
Government
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Anthropology

*to give you an idea of what that looks like on the exam, there are roughly 45 questions on US/world history.
For the second 50%, expect under 10 questions for each of the subjects. (I think I had 3 anthropology)

He can get specific number of test questions and % from the REA or CLEP guide, they might change the distribution a bit from year to year.
