The general REA book literally has everything he needs. The nature of those exams is so general that he would probably be fine. That said, I just read you said he might take govt next, so he might as well wait on SS&H. The more "subjects" he takes inside social science, the less trouble the general social science exam presents. I took mine last and it was a piece of cake.
Subjects inside the SS&H exam:
(first 50%)
US History
Western Civ/World History
(second 50%)
Psychology
Sociology
Government
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Anthropology
*to give you an idea of what that looks like on the exam, there are roughly 45 questions on US/world history.
For the second 50%, expect under 10 questions for each of the subjects. (I think I had 3 anthropology)
He can get specific number of test questions and % from the REA or CLEP guide, they might change the distribution a bit from year to year.
