I would really use some advice.. I am in a desperate situation. I am not a great test taker as I get very nervous but here is my problem. I was suspended from my job until I can obtain 6 college credits. I need to pass two CLEP exams immediately. I attempted Business Management but failed by 2 points. I was such a wreck the day I took it because, well, when you know your job is on the line you tend not to think to clearly, especially when you have 4 kids to take care of. My question is can any one guide me to the fastest way to prepare for this or any other clep exam that may be thought of as an easiest exams to take. what is the fastest way you can think to prepare for the exam any help you can pass of to get me into a test center speedy would be extremely appreciated. I'm shooting for a passing grade, nothing else. If you can help in any way, I would be forever grateful.

Yes, I am desperate Mom who needs to get back to work. It has been a long time since I was in school. I just need to get these credits so I can start working and feeding my kids again.

I am a little hesitant to recommend certain tests, because everyone is different!

Since we are on this thread, I'll give you my feedback for this test...

Introductory Sociology

I passed, today, with a 61! Praise the Lord!

I studied for 4 days taking practice tests, reading the Specific Exam Feedback, and looking up unfamiliar terms.

REA Practice Tests-51 (took this one cold) & 61 (scaled scores, not percentages)
Peterson's Practice Tests-63%, 63%, & 64% (respectively)
Official CLEP Study Guide-68%

Lady Grace's Sociology terms (I personal messaged her and she gave me a list of topics/terms.)

My test did not have a lot of theorists, but I would still suggest learning all of the major theorists and theories. I had several questions that the feedback suggested to learn. (Very helpful!) This is not a difficult test...the material is easy to grasp. A lot of it is common sense!


Analyzing and Interpreting Literature is a good one, for most...(check specific exam feedback)... Plus, it's worth 6 credits!!! It might be a good place to start, since it is reading comprehension and not memorization of facts, dates, etc. Just my two-cents worth! (Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP Study Guide - Free-Clep-Prep.com) Plus, there is a lot of study material out there!

I have not taken any CLEPs yet so I can't give my own personal opinion but based on what others have posted I would recommend Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. And yes this one CLEP will give you the 6cr you need.

I personally thought that English Comp with Essay was quite easy (I studied the guide the night before and I am by no means an english expert - it's my worst subject). Its been a while so I cant remember if it was a DSST or a CLEP, but Technical Writing was easy as well (I didn't even study for this one)

I attempted Business Management but failed by 2 points.

The DSST test program is very similar to CLEP. Originally from the Department of Defense and created for servicemembers to earn credit by independent study, DSST is now run by the Prometric subsidiary of the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

So you have a strong start in business management… but you can't take that CLEP again just yet.

One approach would be to go for the two DSSTs in very close subjects: Introduction to Business, and Principles of Supervision. Basically, these should overlap some with what you've done already, but get less into the weeds of management theory.

If you pass both, 6 semester hours in transcripted credit recommendation, generally treated like CLEPs!

If not, press on! Other DSSTs you might especially want to look at are Technical Writing as dposborne mentions, Here's to Your Health, Lifespan Developmental Psychology, Introduction to Computing, and Environment and Humanity.

If you need to earn six credits quickly, and it doesn't matter what area of study it's in, I would highly suggest looking at the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam - it's worth six credits (so you would only have to take one test instead of two), and it's one of the easiest ones out there, in my opinion . It is mostly a reading comprehension exam with some literature terms thrown in. The most helpful source I used was Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP Study Guide - Free-Clep-Prep.com. It has a couple of websites listed to study with- I think one has some poems, etc. to practice your reading comprehension on. Also, this website (Literature*|*Glossary of Poetic Terms) has a bunch on literature terms, and it was exactly what I needed for this test. I just read through all of the terms and wrote them down to help with memorization. That's about all you need! I also used the CLEP Official Study Guide..highly recommended because it's always a good indicator of the real test, and it gave me a better idea of the format of the actual test. I scored a 73 on it using those resources.

I also failed the CLEP Management by 2 points, but passed the Supervision DSST 2 days later. Like Jonathan Whatley suggested, I'd recommend looking into the Supervision and Intro to Biz DSSTs! Both of those were quite easy. Having already been in work field, that's going to be in your favor as well for these exams.

For the Supervision exam, you only need to answer 36-41% of the questions correctly to pass.
For the Intro to Biz exam, you only need to answer 40-45% of the questions correctly to pass.

One more thought...I believe that the CLEP Principles of Management (3 cr.) and DSST Principles of Supervision (3 cr.) are very similar. I am working towards both of these right now. But if you can study for and pass one, you will just need a little targeted study to pass the other. I mostly using IC flashcards and Free CLEP Prep for these two. But if all you need is just 6 credits in something, I personally think your best option is the Analyzing and Interpreting Lit. Just my two cents .

Who is requiring this? Quite odd that an employer would be concerned about 6 college credits...and doubly odd that they wouldn't care what they are in. Can you explain this a little more?

FEMA qualify as College credits...you could finish 6 this afternoon. Even if you had to transcript them through FCC it would be easy to do and cheap enough for just 6 credits (around $500...if they required it on an actual college transcript).

I forgot about FEMA. Duh!! Definitely try and go that route you could be back at work by Monday!

Thank you everyone... I am a teacher Assistant working for New Rochelle City Schools. I needed 9 credits to move up to level one for the NYC Board of Education. I am very nervous about taking the Analyzing Literature and Compostion exam as I do well with reading compostion but weary on my essay skills and you now need to write two essays for this exam. I wish I had the confidence to obtain this. Yes, In order to get back to work I need a college transcript with 6 college level classes. I can not tell you how desperate I am. Here is more back ground history, I lost my husband to cancer last year, knowing I needed the credits I took 3 math classes, online, from Omega Math. I thought I was covered. The state only accepted 3 of the credits because the two other classes were apparently not college level. That said I will take any and all advice because I truly feel like I am in a state of desperation. You have all been so kind and I greatly appreciate it. What is Fema? And Will it give me a college credit transcript and back to work by Monday I would kiss the ground I walk on, literally. Please help.

Ok thanks for the background, makes alittle more sense now. Sorry to hear about your loss, I just lost Aunt on Sunday to dreaded C.

FEMA will give you one credit for each test you take which are all free. And you do it right on your own computer. You can get a trascript from FEMA or I'm not sure if you are applied to any college where you could get this transcribe to to show as an ELective College Credit.

Another quick option could be ALEKS math courses. I took Intermediate Algebra through them and was finished in one weekend. If you work hard enough you could also bang out the College Algebra and that would be your 6 credits. Or do one of those and 3 FEMA tests. FEMA won't give you a "college" transcript but it will give you a transcript that would go torward college credit.
