Racking up credits to transfer to WGU?
#11
So you apply to get transfer guidelines but don't enroll? Just curious, can you finish 90 credits reasonably fast? How about cost, has it been expensive for your son to get to this point? Sorry for bombarding with all the questions

The rule at WGU is that you can apply, transfer in any credit you've earned to that point, and then enroll. Once you enroll, you can no longer transfer in ANY credits (for example, if you were in the middle of a semester at a CC). So, you really need to do EVERYTHING before you enroll there.

They are much more customer service oriented than TESU for instance, and will help you plan out what will work for different areas. Between them and this forum, you should be able to get all 90cr completed and transferred over to them.

The other good thing - they let you apply for free, so you're not out of pocket anything when applying, although the cost of sending transcripts will be there.

As far as speed, it's impossible to tell someone how quickly they can accumulate credits, because it is dependent on a slew of factors; how much time you have to dedicate to your courses/exams, how quickly you read, if you're a good test-taker, etc. Plus there's previous life experience, making some courses easier for you than others.

As I also said, you can get most of your credits for an average of about $100/course or less, so for 90cr, that's 30 courses, which is about $3000. If you take ALEKS courses, Saylor courses, Shmoop courses, 6cr CLEP exams, more than 3 courses in a month at SL, more than 2 courses in a month at Study.com - all of those will bring down your costs, some considerably.

One more question, would you consolidate those 90 credits on ACE before transferring?

That would save transcript fees. It depends on how big a deal the transcript fees are to you, and whether you have any incentive to send them earlier. If you have courses whose transfer equivalency you're not confident about, sending in a transcript or two early could ease your mind. Also if you want until the end and find you missed something and have to go back and take it, you end up with an extra transcript fee anyway.

My son attended community college last year, spring semester, so he wasted a bit of time doing that. Since May he has earned all the credits listed in my signature, for relatively little money. Study.com was done via the scholarship still going around, so those were free. He did the SL courses very quickly and we used 3 coupons, so I spent maybe $350 with them for all the courses he's taken. Saylor courses were $25 each. The most expensive has been $97.50 for the MIS course he's taking now. But compared to the community college courses, it's been super super cheap, even though his tuition was covered by a scholarship.

You can go ahead and apply to WGU - be sure to get a referral code for application fee waiver - once you do that you'll get the transfer guide and you can have your transcripts evaluated anytime you like. You just must finish all transfer courses prior to formally enrolling.
Here Researching for my son, who has done the following:
Community College: Intro to Philosophy, Fundamentals of IT, English Comp 1
Saylor: Intro to Business, Principles of  Marketing, Corporate Communication
Shmoop: US History 2 (WGU won't accept this)
ALEKS: Int. Algebra, College Algebra
Study.com: Personal Finance, Principles of Finance, HR Management, Global Business, Advanced Operations Management
Straighterline: US History 2, Environmental Science, US History, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, English Comp 2, Principles of Management, Business Law, Business Ethics, Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Accounting 1,Communication, Managerial Accounting, Statistics
Ed4Credit: Managing Information Systems
Sophia: Project Management
WGU: Bachelors in HR Management

Second son is currently attending Penn Foster for his high school diploma, then on to Ashworth for An Associates in Criminal Justice
