Please help! I desperately need an alternative to a course
#1
Hi everyone,
I've been working on a BS Finance degree from Excelsior, and I was in the home stretch with only 7 courses/exams and the capstone left till I finish.
One of the Finance AOS requirements is Advanced Financial Management, and Excelsior had previously approved for me to take Davar's FIN401 Corporate Finance to fulfill that requirement.

Approvals at Excelsior last for 6 months, then they expire off the list and you have to request them again.  My approval expired on Sept 9th, and I've been studying for the exam but haven't taken it yet.  When I requested to re-add Davar FIN401, I was denied, and I was told that it could only apply to the lower level general business core Financial Management requirement.  I did appeal this, but was denied again by the supervisor.

I've already taken Penn Foster Financial Management for the business core.  My degree requirements haven't changed (I am enrolled and locked into a degree plan);  and the NCCRS evaluation hasn't changed for FIN401 since I was previously approved in March 2017.  Regardless of this, Excelsior was clear they won't accept the course now.  I *know* this is my fault for not finishing it earlier, but I was dealing with personal and family issues and was doing the best I could.

I'm devastated as I absolutely don't have the money or time to take the Advanced Financial Management class directly from Excelsior.  I've also wasted a ton of time studying for the Davar exam.  I was depending on this exam.
I was hoping someone might know of another course or exam that would work for Advanced Financial Management?
Would it be better to switch to TESU?  I can list what classes/exams I've taken.  I just paid my annual enrollment fee to Excelsior last month but will switch if necessary Sad
Thank you for reading.

Honestly, the $1800 you're going to have to pay for TESU's Residency waiver would negate any savings you might get for switching, especially considering the annual enrollment fee you just paid.

Thanks.  I knew this, but I guess the more pressing problem is not having time to take the class from Excelsior... I was looking for something more like the Davar exam or a Study.com type class.  If I have to take the actual class I won't be able to finish everything until next April/May, but I was on track to finish by this December.

Well, post your courses on here, and I will see what it would take for you to get the BSBA in Finance at TESU.

If you have that many classes left at Excelsior, it'll roughly equal 7 classes left at TESU or COSC. I would continue on at Excelsior and see if you complete the rest of the courses by UExcels or any other cheap/easy/fast option. Btw, even if you decide to switch to TESU, your timing is off. You won't be able to graduate until March 2018, as December graduation has an application deadline of October 1.

One of the first ones I'd check with them on is the TECEP Security Analysis and Portfolio Management (FIN-321-TE). It's an upper level finance course and specifically is management oriented.

Oh, one more thing. I know we often don't talk about the more traditional means of doing this, but depending on your financial situation you may qualify for a pell grant which would cover the cost of that course, or you could always do a small student loan.

I have found test out/Study.com/etc. alternatives for everything except the capstone (which can't be taken elsewhere) , so that's why I was really disappointed that I might have to take the actual class through them.  Excelsior is the same way, I wouldn't actually graduate until March, but I needed to finish everything by the end of December.  If I have to take the class, I won't even finish everything until next April & graduate even later.

Thank you for letting me know! I submitted it and they said no.. It would only be accepted for the Business core LL Financial Management requirement.

I was approved to take that TECEP, but it will already apply to a different requirement in the AOS (securities analysis).  Thank you for mentioning it though! I don't qualify for any pell grant aid unfortunately.  My partner has a lot of student loans we are paying down, so I was trying to avoid those, but it's a possibility.

To clarify, I was planning to complete everything including the capstone by the end of December 2017, and graduate in March 2018.  I was then going to apply and hopefully attend a grad program beginning in Fall 2018.  Excelsior said the next available Advanced financial management class they offer is in the Spring II 2018 semester, so if I have to go that route, I would finish that on April 29, 2018, and graduate in July 2018, I think.  This would put me a full year behind in being able to apply and attend the grad program.  It doesn't have a January enrollment option.

It's also too late to take the class at another traditional school for the current fall semester.  I just don't understand why they approved the course in March 2017 but not now.  The NCCRS evaluation for the Davar FIN401 course was completed in 2016 and hasn't changed since then.  I also don't understand why Penn Foster Corporate Finance wouldn't work.  If it's upper level and satisfies Financial Management, why wouldn't it be Advanced Financial Management?

How hard did you push them on this issue?  Based on what you wrote, it sounds like you just quietly appealed.  If I were in your shoes, I would be more aggressive.  You could emphasize that the fact that they did approve it before and then protest the fact that they decided to change now after you put all that time into studying? Not very fair, especially when you had pressing personal issues. You could also stress that you are seriously looking into leaving Excelsior and going to TESU which means they lose $. These arguments may persuade them to reverse back to their original approval.

I messaged them back saying they had approved it before (they approved it twice before actually!), and how there has been no change to the NCCRS evaluation, so why are they denying it now? I also sent screenshots of where it was approved before.  I also mentioned that I'd been studying for it already.
The advisor said she sent it to her supervisor, and they sent me copies of the Excelsior course description vs the Davar one.  They said based on those they will not  [emphasis theirs] approve the Davar course.
I'm not a very aggressive person at all, and I usually just take no for an answer in all facets of life.  I'll try your suggestion and tell them if they can't accept the Davar course or Penn foster's corporate finance course, they will delay my expected graduation timeline by several months, so I am looking into leaving Excelsior for TESU.
