Check the Specific Feedback section, there's lots of info and links to study guides. I personally used the REA book and found it invaluable, but I was never a very "literate" person so to speak. The section on poetry really opened my eyes to how literature is written and read. I also spent time on my commutes listening to an audio book called A Brief History of English and American Literature. Not to learn all the specific details of the histories (A&I is not a history test) but to get the overall "form" of how literature and poetry weave into and influence each other. It also had a lot of readings from old poetry and literature as examples, which helped me get a "feel" for basic analysis.
I studied the book, read the links from the feedback forum, listened to about a third of the audiobook, took some sample tests, and scored a 79. Not bad for an illiterate. :roflol:
(though in fairness the version of the test I took seemed to be written for a junior high audience, it seemed that simple)
Incidentally, learning about the poetry and listening to the audiobook improved my own writing. I was never much of a "florid" creative writer, but the essays I've written recently have started to use some more emotional imagery and metaphors. The audiobook also gave me a much deeper understanding and appreciation for the role of literature and poetry in influencing society and history, something we as a culture have forgotten in only two generations thanks to television and the Internet. So I think it is a very worthwhile subject to learn about, even if only for a couple of weeks, because you may find you keep learning about it long afterwards.
