New Georgetown Coursera Bachelors

By the way, I am also considering this program but am concerned that employers or graduate schools may treat a liberal art degree differently, as inferior to a regular BA or BSc degree in that you actually have no major.

If employers or graduate schools treat a liberal art degree differently, there would not be so many students from ivy league schools getting an undergrad in history or English, etc. Sadly, most people say, getting a ivy league degree will not make a difference, they are mistaken, at least in my experience. Resume scanner (ATS) give special treatment to where a job applicant went to school. Went to a ivy league, more points for you, higher on the potential call list for screening for a job interview. Went to a ivy league, more potential for job networking because you are part of an exclusive club now. Whether its fair or not, that's up for debate.

I think this is perfect for my fiancee. Is there a reason they rejected your friend?

Hi frankc,

My friend had a difficult time in undergraduate school. She had a 1.33 overall GPA and didn't graduate so after being out of school for ten years, she applied to Georgetown hoping to get a second chance. That may be why they rejected her. Just keep in mind any classes that went toward a degree program won't be considered in transfer credit.

Hi everyone, thank you for following up. I've been in the depths of completing a Google IT Support Professional certificate through ASU and just finished course number three out of five. I think so long as I keep taking IT and other courses, if I can work up to 64 credits to transfer in, I can revisit the Georgetown program, but that won't be happening any time soon. In either case, I'll keep everyone updated. My wants and needs in terms of coursework I do tends to change from time to time.

I appreciate your response! Yeah, a low GPA is definitely a reason for rejection. My fiancee never attended college but worked as a dancer for ten years. College education doesn't excite her much because she has never felt the need for a degree. However, her eyes lit up excitedly when I told her about this program last night (Perhaps this is the only university she has heard of). She lived in DC for about a decade and has friends who went to Georgetown University. She's well aware of the reputation and quality of education it offers. I believe she's seriously considering applying for it. Thank you for sharing this!

Hi frankc,

Right. We knew the GPA might be an issue, but since it is the school of continuing studies, I'd imagine from their advertising that they'd be getting many students looking for a second chance, so to speak. I'm bummed for my friend, because she needs a degree to keep things together if her current career doesn't work out.

Your fiancee would get an ID card and access to all on campus facilities in this program. The school also provides you with a Georgetown email address through which they do email pretty regularly, so I'd consider that a plus. If she's looking for the full Georgetown experience, this is a way to get it. I'd recommend the Masters program instead over getting an undergraduate degree there if it's her first one- they cost about the same (when not transferring in any credits) but the masters has more utility.

@frankc, have a chat with your SO and see what she thinks. I also believe it's a great school, she may want to go undergrad or go for a cheap, easy, fast undergrad and then decide to go with this institution for grad school instead as mentioned by collegecareerstudent... Either way you decide, take into account what the SO needs and wants are, of course there are various variables in play as well...

Yeah, it's definitely a bummer for your friend! Once again, thank you very much. I will tell my fiancee about this.

Yeah that's also a great idea! I'll tell my fiancee about all this and let her decide. Thanks!

To revive this thread, my SO got accepted into the program and already started taking classes. They are waiting on evaluation of their credits though (not sure why they have been allowed to start classes.)

It has been difficult to 'talk to a real person' at Georgetown about this program. He has lots of questions and not getting any help. First advising appointment he could get is for the end of Sept.

@mohelena02, I see you decided and settled for the UCA PhD... Was it this program going at 63 credits? https://uca.edu/online/change-leadership...sion-ph-d/ And the other site page: https://uca.edu/phdleadership/

Curious if they are self funding, or some sort of tuition assistance? Which concentration? I assume it is the Georgetown name they're after (nothing wrong with that).  Even with the max transfer in it is quite costly, at least another $22k after transfers in (for a bachelor on this forum). Did they already have many existing credits from before? Clearly, I have many questions - so in short, how did they get to this degree as 'the one'? Smile
