Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm in some desperate need of some answers.
I bought the REA book on A&I lit. and took the practice tests when I was done. To be honest, I scored 17 out of 40 questions right! I don't think I'm ready for the test (which I take on Monday). The questions are totally hard to understand and very ambiguous. Plus, I don't know what to study for. The literary terms and passages out of the REA book? Or the literary terms and passages out of CLEP 2012 book? And do I have to worry about how to tell if a poem is in iambic pentameter, trochee, anapest, etc...? Please help me, I don't know what to do anymore.
Thank you for your help, please.

I used the 2011 Study Guide when I took that exam last year and it was exactly what was on the test (as far as type of content). Study from that (your 2012 book) and you've still got a chance on Monday. It is the strangest exam I taken, it has as you said questions which are "totally hard to understand" but in the end you might be surprised with a pass. If it still worries you too much then take a different exam on Monday and wait to take it. I'm assuming you told the testing center which one you were doing but I don't think they would be too upset if you changed your mind. You didn't list whether you've done other exams or not, maybe this isn't the exam for you to take this week. If this is your first exam, you might consider an exam in area you are comfortable with (for me that would be one of the computing exams).

yes, this is my first ever CLEP exam. I'm just taking it for 3 credits I need in humanities in order to keep my LIFE scholarship. This is a do or die thing for me.
I'm ok in Literature, but science is my thing. However, I have a TON of biology credits, so Bio CLEP isn't for me. Like I stated earlier, I'm a bit confused on what I should actually study for and what terms I should look for on the exam. Will there be anything on the exam about how to tell what kind of iamb a poem is in (trochee, datayl, etc...)? Those terms and this are the only things confusing me right now.

All I remember is the test was very boring and when I got done I was surprised I passed. It gets into a few of those specific questions but overall it is mainly about interpreting meaning of words, lines, or sections of a passage. The questions are all over the place but if you can do the "what does the author mean by line number 5" type questions then you should pass just fine.

As for which literary terms to study for, it shouldn't matter which book you use, literary terms are literary terms, no matter what. Look them over, you will notice most are familiar. Ones that aren't, write down and go over a few times. I am terrible at metering, so I guessed on all those questions. I seem to remember there weren't many. As long as you understand...or can use context to figure out the passages on the test, you'll be okay. Don't go nuts studying particular passages out of either book, they won't be on the test. The practice tests just give you an idea of the kind of questions that will be on the test. I'd say go over the questions you got wrong and re-study the associated passages to find out just what the question was looking for. That will be a big help. I really think (if you like to read) that you'll be fine and be surprised and pleased after seeing your score. Let us know!

Dont take the A&I if your not a fast reader. Don't take it merely to get those credits. Yes, for some of us that reading is our strongest ability this test is a piece of cake, but for others like my son it is a nightmare. How about another humanities test like intro to sociology or intro to psychology. I think intro to sociology is one of the easiest to study for and easiest to pass. I strongly advise you t rethink taking this test and find another.

Sociology and Psychology are Social Sciences exams, but there are definitely other exams to take if they make you more comfortable. If you are still on the English related path then DSST Technical Writing may be your exam. Otherwise CLEP exams include: Lit exams, Language exams, and the Humanities exam. DSST adds in: Art of the western world, public speaking, technical writing, ethics in america, and world religions.

I'm a fast reader, but I do tend to over analyze things and that might mess me up. I really don't want to give up, but I don't want to fail either...
