Need an UL English course? Harvard has one cheap!

I also like to consider the big picture though. Ideally, I'd love to have any HES degree, I mostly buy the idea of the Harvard Brand...I would be proud of that and I think I could make it work to my advantage. If I had to list my academic interests Poetry wouldn't be all that high, but it's related to writing and history, and literature...all of those interest me quite a lot. The price and the potential on these courses are just too good to resist.

Totally agree.
While I haven't done it yet, I'm likely to do more with them. I have 4 grad credits in Bio and 4grad credits in psychology at HES. I'd like to round everything off to 3 sets of 20 (English, Biology, Psychology). I'll need to go throw some compost on my money tree.

I have 3 grad credits in Writing from my foray at WNMU. Wouldn't mind nestling English/Writing/History together...either new Masters or just the credits under my MBA.

I'm more qualified to teach business/hospital administration, the rest would likely on come after I was working somewhere.

And who cares I get to try a Harvard course taught by a full Harvard Professor for $200!!!
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Note that ONLY the summer course is open for registration.  Fall catalog and registration are not up or open yet.

Thank you so much! I just registered Big Grin

I noticed that this professor has a few EdX courses running. So if anyone is unsure about signing up for the Extension poetry courses, you might want to enroll free at EdX to get some idea. At least one of the EdX courses seems to be on a poet that would be covered in the summer Extension course. I think the EdX ones are probably similar the undergrad level, or easier, but it could be worth looking. If you search for Harvard Poetry, it brings up all of professor New's courses, most of which are archived. It's quick to enroll in one.

For Jennifer and anyone else who has taken an Extension course for graduate credit, is it hard to get an A? Like, do you have put in so much more work to get an A versus a B? I want to take this, but I'm also worried about my graduate GPA because I plan to apply to a doctoral program later on.

Thanks Ideas, i've signed up for the Whitman EdX too - I've decided that I am not especially excited about annotation lol. Getting an A will be a lot of work. I got an A- in my Bio class, and I hope this doesn't sound funny, but I was really trying. There is just a lot of writing, and a lot of depth expected, at least in the classes I took. I also have a terrible time with closed book exams, which mine were (ouch) but the poetry set doesn't look like there are exams, and this *feels* like a class that allows you to write persuasive essay-style as opposed to scouring and citing in academic journals. For my strengths, that's a plus. I feel like people who hang out on message boards like this one probably already have the kind of writing-skill set that will be useful in this class, but that's just a guess until we get in there.

Thanks. Good points. I wonder if annotation is part of the grade, and if it's hard to get an A in that portion.

To do the certificate, you would have to bring in 2 from social science taken 2015 or newer, my previous HES course in Psychology is too old (boo) but I probably will not decide just yet.  I am planning to grab the last 2 this fall (assuming I don't hate poetry too much) and decide after that.  EVEN IF I decide to get a cert, I'll likely still grab a 4th English so I can add that to my teaching credential... but now we're getting in to some big money for a "nice to have."

It's worth pointing out that the Whitman summer course does NOT HAVE TEXTBOOKS.  All of the content is provided via pdf.  That's a huge bonus, since my previous book lists for HES courses has been heavy and expensive.

Is it the same course with the same work expectations for the UL and grad versions of this course? Just curious as my son may need an UL English course? He has an associate degree and UL English classes which include writing intensive classes, but they still are saying they will require that he takes a LL English Comp 2 course for his bachelor degree (Excelsior). Does anyone know of any UL Ethics or English comp equivalent courses, as it seems silly to take a LL Eng comp course at this point in his degree process. Or how hard are the StraigherLine or other exams for Eng Comp2? He has reading and writing disabilities (Dyslexia & Dysgraphia spectrums) but has done well in his online classes in English, but he struggles in retaining details so I'm not sure how he'd do with the exams. Are the Eng comp 2 exams proctored? Or would they be open book?

So are all of these $200 Harvard poetry courses UL? Regardless of if you do graduate or undergraduate?

That decision would be made by your host institution. If I were betting, I would say that either would be UL. I would shoot an email to your registrar before you enroll.

No. The grad version has more work.

I took the English Comp II TECEP and found it easy. I studied for 15 minutes. I have taken English classes in the past. The TECEP allowed you to use a style guide book to help with formatting and other details, but someone has to be able to knock out 4-6 short pieces of writing in a row.

Not sure on the other Eng Comp II, but I think there is probably one easier than the TECEP.
