What do we buy from Russia besides oil and vodka? Fertilizer.
Fertilizer prices are up 50% from a year ago. Without fertilizer, crop yields go down by 40%, affecting the global food supply.
Ukraine supplies around 30% of the export supply of wheat. However, with the current war, it's unlikely Ukraine will be able to produce wheat at a similar level as in previous years.
Countries in Africa are at risk of widespread famine, and other countries are as well, such as the middle-east country of Yemen.

Before COVID hit, I bought a chest freezer. I'm not ready yet to go full-blown prepper purchasing a year's supply of dried goods. But I do have almost a year's supply of TP.

For the U.S. and other western countries, we should be ok.
Anything you do differently nowadays with food/supply shopping? Stock up on anything like rice or flour?

That reminds me, I need to go to an Asian supermarket for some rice. The local supermarkets only sell bags that are about 1 pound (maybe 2), but the Asian markets have better quality rice in 20-40lb bags.

I'm not a big rice eater except when it comes to sushi! I have to buy Japanese brand rice to make good sushi.

I don't eat a LOT of rice myself, but I prefer jasmine or basmati to the standard long grain white rice. Jasmine is easier to cook with than basmati, though. Long grain white rice works okay for Spanish/Mexican rice.

Unfortunately, Ukraine exports a significant amount of food. Aside from the lack of fertilizer, there will be shortages and higher prices if the war continues and the harvest in Ukraine is lowered or doesn't exist.

You all were planning on starting one of those low-carb diets anyway. Here's your motivation.

So Biden came out and said the food shortages were going to be very real. Don't hear that often from politicians. Many places across the U.S. are seeing product limits and items that take weeks to get back into the stores. Our food supply is fragile anyway, so I think shortages for a while is a big possibility.
