Looking for something similar to the FEMA programs that indirectly give college cred
#1
Thanks to this forum I have been accumulating credit from the FEMA independant study courses. This has been extremely convenient and affordable; however, I'm afraid I'm not studying emergency management so all it's good for is elective credit.

I'm looking for anything that subscribes to that kind of system, ie. Get raw credit that certain colleges accept and subsiquently convert to actual regional college credit and then transfer later.

I'm woefully under-employed right now so I want find ways of getting credit cheap so I don't just stop making progress while I'm in between school. It doesn't have to be free like FEMA's program, it just has to be cheap. Shooting for $100/credit but want to hear anything. The cumminity colleges in conservative colorado springs are expensive!

I have searched google extensively but it is coming up almost exclusively with pages relating to dual credits, or college in high school programs.

Thanks!

Have you investigated Straighterline for $99 .

StraighterLine

StraighterLine

Pay $99 complete the course in under 30 days and pay FHSU their admission fee, $30 I believe and you get 3 credits, if you are really fast and can finish 2 courses it would be an even better deal.

Buy your text books used and it should come in under the $100 per credit.

And then of course there are Clep's and DSST exams which definitely are under $100 per credit earned.

So considering most clep tests are under $100.00 and worth at a minimum 3 hours, that seems your best course to accumulate some credits. I strongly recommend joining instantcert and using the flashcards and specific exam forum. I have taken nine tests, passed seven, missed two by one point, but still have accumulated almost 48 hours by taking exams. Well worth the $785.00 I have spent to take the exams (even with the two I failed).

Thank you all for your very quick responces!

I have seen straighter line, even visited the site and poked around.
That is very much what I'm looking for; however, I was concerned that classes would take a long time if it encourages paying by the month. It seemed likely it would take four months given their flatt fee. If it can be done in 30 days -- and I strongly suspect that this forum is filled with better students and smarter people -- that would be great.

100/month is great if it only takes one month. Can it really be done? How many hours a day would it take to accomplish that? I of course know you cannot speak for me, but for those of you who have done it, how long did it take?

I am reading about ALEKS now. Thanks for the pointer, I'll respond about it after I research a bit. And CLEP is on the agenda, I just don't generally do well with that sort of things. I have a few IT certs (MS/CompTIA) but I found it very challenging memorizing the material without a class. I will take CLEP, but I'm loving the FEMA courses and that method of getting credit cheap.

Thanks so much!

Just because I responded to the straighterline post specifically doesn't mean I don't want to hear more ideas!

Even if it takes 4 months to complete, it's still a good deal. That's $33.33/credit. You can't beat that.

Actually, if it took you 4 mo's ($99*4) it would cost $132/credit plus the admission cost at FHSU.

And yes you can complete a course within 30 days, I completed Accounting 1 in 3 weeks. Where there is a will , there is a way.

I almost forgot: I think you can take Uexcel exams starting the end of June, these would also be another way to pick up credits under $100/ credit. UExcel Examinations

I heard about UExcel, I had no idea it would be back so soon.

I suppose if those straighterline courses can be done in 30 days by a smart person it can be done in no more than 60 by me Smile. I run a bussiness which makes distance learning ideal and scheduled learning damn near impossible so you guys are helping more than you know.

You guys are fantastic.

I completed both english 1 and alegebra 1 in less than thirty days thru straighterline. I recommend Fort Hays as the partner college. I had absolutely no problem with my local cc accepting these transfers from Fort Hays. I am about to sign up for Economics 1 and Economics 2 and expect to complete both within the 30 day period.

Best of luck.
