General Education Requirements are divided into 3 large categories - Humanities, Social Sciences/History, and Natural Sciences/Math.
For a BS, you need a combination of 9 credits in 2 of the categories and 6 credits in the other category.
For a BA, you need a combination of 12 credits in 2 of the categories and 9 credits in the other category.
The 2 Depth Requirements are 12 credits each in a single discipline with 3 upper level. There are lots of topics to choose from. History and Psychology are 2 that are available through testing.
Also, look at Alissa's Degree Plan Template for a BS in Liberal Studies:
http://www.degreeforum.net/62322-post10.html
This should help you see how the credits need to be arranged.
One way to find which categories your credits fall under is to look at the CLEP and DSST part of the student guide to credit by exam.
If you post the credits you already have, we can try to help you more specifically.
I hope this helps!

Its been a while, Ive been waiting on Excelsior to tell me what to do next. It says I need 6 credits in Natural Science/Math distribution, 10 credits in Additional professional or Arts and Sciences, 1 credit in Social Science/History Distribution and 1 credit for Information Literacy. These are all I need to complete my associates degree. Can I test in all these and then enroll and turn them in??? Also which tests would be the best to take to get done quicklly? Thanks

All the CLEP tests are Lower Level, and most of the DANTES/DSSTs are lower level, but there are a few upper level DANTES/DSSTs.
It looks like you'd be able to clep out of basically everything except for Information Literacy, which you can take from Penn Foster or LSU and transfer towards your degree. PF's cost for the course is somewhere in the $90-100 range. Feedback from people who've done the course say that you can complete it anywhere from a weekend to about a week, depending on how you use your time with it.

6 credits Natural Sciences/Math - You could take the College Math CLEP or the Natural Sciences CLEP (or Biology or Chem and so on) which are 6 credit tests that would cover this requirement. There are also a few DSSTs that would fit this selection, like Astronomy/Geology/Physical Science but those are 3 credits each.
1 Credit Social Science/History - You have a ton of options here. All the tests are 3-6 credits, and I believe (I'm not 100% positive because I haven't been through the process myself as of yet) that extra credits will spill over into the next section.
10 Credits Electives - The sky is the limit here, any CLEP/DSST you'd like to take should be able to fit here.
Just make sure that you don't run into duplication with any existing credit that you have with your tests.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.
Bachelor of Science in PsychoRabbitology degree
Master of Education with a specialty in Rabbit-specific destructive munitions (or eLearning & Technology, I forget which)
Doctor of Philosophy in Wile E. Leadership with an area of specialty in Acme Mind Expansion - 2017 Hopefully

Hi again!
I am 17 credits away from the same degree.
You do not need any upper-level credits for this associate degree. If you are going on to a Bachelor's degree through Excelsior, though, it would not hurt to try an upper-level exam now.
I would recommend looking through the CLEP and DSST list in the "Student Guide to Credit by Exam", which is on Excelsior's website. You can choose any tests from those lists that fit those categories and do not duplicate the credits you already have.
Again if you are going on to a Bachelor's degree that may affect what you want to choose now.

Just curious what good B&M schools that have a good transfer policy that accepts around 90+ college credits.
Just to give a background, my son is currently 21 years of age and currently going to a state college in California for the past three years and has close to a 100 credits. He basically took all of his general education courses, but during his three years, he initially took courses for interior design then later graphic design. Both of these courses are unrelated and if he decides to pursue graphic design, it would take him another 2 years to complete the degree. I think it's like 5 1/2 years because he changed majors.
At this stage, he is starting to get frustrated because he took courses early on and they didn't count and if you have been paying attention to the colleges in California, it's pretty bad. Lots of programs are getting cut and it's getting harder to get into them because they are not only cutting enrollment, but also cutting jobs and the amount of people applying is getting larger.
I asked him what his passion is and lets focus on that route. He said he would love to get into Architecture, but he didn't go that route because there are no Architecture programs in the area and if he goes into an M.Arch program, it would have to be the +3. Meaning, if you have an undergraduate degree that's not Architecture related, you would have to go into a 3 year master's program. If you have a B.Arch, it's 1 year program and Architecture (non-B.Arch) it's 2 year. I started laughing and saying, heck, even if he went into graphic design, he would still spend about the same amount of time, because of the earlier courses he took.
What I recommended that he does is to consider a Liberal Arts or General Studies program, and focus on courses that interest him and take courses that would also benefit him for an March degree. I remember when I first want to Excelsior, I initially enrolled into their Liberal Arts program and could have completed my degree a year ago, but I later changed it to a General Business.
At my son's age, I personally don't recommend that he goes to Excelsior if he wants to apply at many of the top programs for M.Arch +3 program. I would think he should try to transfer to a good B&M school that has like liberal arts or general studies. I would like to get some feedback from ppl on this forum on ideas of some good schools.
So far, I sent emails with unofficial transcripts to following colleges.
Chadron State College
Charter Oak State College
Fort Hays State College
Liberty University
Peru State College
