Kaplan Documenting Your Experiences for College Credit
#1
I came across this free, self paced, open course from Kaplan. It looks like basically a self paced PLA with quizzes for each module, but 3 ACE credits are available for the course.

https://openlearning.kaplan.com/kuopenlearning/LRC100/

In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in career assessment, career exploration, or career and life planning (12/13).
5/1/2013 - Present

Here is the bad news, it says that a fee can be paid to have the portfolio assessed, but it doesn't have information about the price. I am assuming that to get ACE credits the fee must be paid, I have emailed them to confirm.

I signed up for the course to check it out, and it looks well laid out, there is access to a PDF book called 'Cashing In' (may be useful for those doing PLA's)
I clicked through the payment at the end to see the price of evaluation, and it came up $1500 :O $1500 for a self paced open course :O

It does say however that there may be scholarships available, so it may still be useful for someone that is eligible Smile

I received a reply form Kaplan and they said that the 3 ACE credits are for completing the quizzes on the course itself. There is no need to pay for the portfolio submission first.
So, I completed the lessons and quizzes on the course, submitted a request through ACE and it was approved in 24 hours.

3 free credits Big Grin

I'm assuming they will go into free electives, i'm really not sure how it will transfer to TESC....maybe student success or something.

As for the course: The course is focused on building a portfolio for a PLA from Kaplan, it guides you through all the steps needed to complete and submit the portfolio, for a price of $1500 as I mentioned in my last post. However, it is not $1500 for 3 credits, from reading the guides it seems up to 1 year of a degree can be awarded for an extensive portfolio.

The portfolio could be useful for those people that have an extensive work history, and can prove they have those skills at college level. I noticed quite a few people here that are getting degrees but already have many years career experience in IT, or business.

Thanks for the updated info! I'm looking for any and all free elective credit options to fill up the 27 free elective credits I need for my degree through TESC. I may give this a shot...

You don't need to do the portfolio sections to get the credits for the course. Just read the lessons and score over 70 on each of the 7 quizzes. Once all the quizzes are done, send a request from ACE Smile

Thanks for this information. I started the course myself to see if it something my daughter could manage. So far so good. Thanks for giving yet another opportunity to receive credit for free.

I'm wondering if Kaplan provide you a transcript for this course.

I'm not sure if they would provide a transcript.
The course is added to your ACE transcript.

Photag, any information you have on the other three courses available being ACE credit eligible would also be helpful Smile

Unfortunately Kaplan Open University only has this one course available for ACE credits.

There are actually 15 courses on there, and I quite like the layout and system Kaplan use. I hope they have more courses available for credits in the future.

I have noticed that some of the courses can be assessed for a fee: College Composition I costs $100

I did this just for the heck of it (never hurts to have an extra 3 credits) ...applied to ACE for the credits at lunch today, they're already approved! Even though I didn't do all the project to prepare a PLA, I can see that it would do a great job of helping to prepare your paperwork to apply for one. If I didn't already have enough of these kind of credits, I would be tempted.
