Kaplan Documenting Your Experiences for College Credit
#11
TESC has PLA listed also as part of the general educations courses. I sent TESC an email asking for about the PLA

MY QUESTION:
Kaplan has a portfolio class that is ACE approved: Documenting Your Experiences for College Credit: Learning Recognition Course (LRC 100). My question is does this class fall under TESC general education course Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or can it be substitute for either Introduction to Prior Learning Assessment (PLA-100) or Introduction to Portfolio Development (PLA-200)?

TESC RESPONSE:
Thank you for your question. A number of other institutions offer a course that is comparable to our PLA-100 and PLA-200 courses, and would be accepted as transfer credit equivalent to our PLA-100 or 200. However, each school's approach and methodology for portfolio development is different so rather than take the course elsewhere, it makes more sense to take it with TESC to learn more about what we specifically require in a portfolio.
If you have questions, please feel free to reach me directly. I will gladly assist you.

I plan on taking this course and see if TESC will apply to my GE. I am planning on changing my degree around due to my finance. I will let you know, if it does apply as a GE also instead of Free Electives.

So I found the Kaplan course a week ago, then only stumbled on this thread today. Tongue I'm wondering if anyone has successfully transferred this course to TESC? Or anyone currently enrolled in TESC who will be able to check this with the academic advisor?

I completed 7 courses quizzes and applied to ACE for the credits. One hour after that, Kaplan's representitive called and left a message on the phone to call back to her to talk about creating a portfolio. I do not intend to create and evaluate a PLA portfolio with them. Should I just ignore the call? Will they give the ACE credits in that case? Did somebody have a similar experience (had to talk with Kaplan on the phone in order to get credits)?

Did you ever take the course and transfer it to TESC? I took it, am trying to figure out if they will apply it to general ed, and also how many credits will be given. ACE recommends 3 units, but TESC's PLA-100 course is only 1 unit. So I'd like to see what happens with this.

Thanks!

TESC expects you to take PLA-100 and PLA-200 for a total of 3 credits. Taking only PLA-100 will only allow you to submit one 3-credit portfolio.

So the Kaplan PLA course doesn't count? Or will it transfer to TESC as PLA-100 with 1 credit? I don't need to actually submit a PLA, I just need 4 units of General Ed, and I thought this looked like an easy 1 free credit, and then I just have to figure out that last course to take to finish gen ed.

No, the Kaplan PLA course should meet the introductory course requirement to submit a PLA. Whether or not it will count as gen ed is not known yet. If it does count as gen ed or anything else, I'm sure it will be awarded the full 3 credits since it's the equivalent of PLA-100 and PLA-200, and credit hours aren't arbitrary. ACE recommends the number of credits based on the number of hours it should take to complete the course.

I think someone once confirmed here that TEEX courses do not count as gen ed. I am not 100% sure on that.

So much has changed in the last couple of years for TESC that it's hard to keep up. Some is good, some is bad. Mostly good I think (especially cost). In looking at their General Education Courses page, PLA-100 and PLA-200 count in the Intellectual & Practical Skills section (A). So I'm really hoping to get that 1 (or 3) units in general ed. 3 would be fantastic. It only took me about 3 hours to complete the course itself, less time than I spent on some of the FEMA courses! Which of course don't count, as I was not an enrolled student at the time they decided to not allow them any longer. banghead

Anyway, thanks for your quick response. I guess I will see what happens when I send my ACE transcript to TESC. Which won't be very soon, as I think I have another class to take and get over to ACE before I send it.

And as a quick update, I signed into ACE about 10 minutes after I took the Kaplan course, and about 15 minutes later, it was in my "courses" listing. So fast!
