KCTCS Learn on Demand registration change
#1
Hello all,

While talking with KCTCS, I learned of a recent change to their Learn on Demand program. Instead of being able to register any time during the semester, course now start on several Mondays during a given term and have to be completed by the end of that term. They refer to the new classes as Learn on Demand Hybrid, but don't let the hybrid title intimidate. At first, I assumed hybrid meant there were campus visits required, but this is not the case. With the new system it appears these courses may qualify for financial aid, but I would run that past an advisor before counting on it.

For those unfamiliar, KCTCS Learn on Demand offers many Information Technology courses that are self paced and don't require a proctor. All of the courses I have take so far use Cengage materials which are horrible, but the price is fair ($550 - $750) per course and they can be completed quickly.

These classes actually give credits? Are they through the college or through ACE? Does COSC and Tesc accept them?

Since KCTCS is a community college, TESC and COSC must accept their credits. The courses are not through ACE. You must request the transcript from KCTCS and they will send it to TESC or COSC. TESC will not give upper credits for any of the KCTCS courses because their new policy is not to award upper credits for community college courses. I do not know COSC policy with upper credits though.

These are self-paced courses, but they are college courses for credit. As lavagirl said, they are all lower level courses so there are only so many that will help. TESC transferred all 6 classes I took from KCTCS, but there is no requirement that a college accept a given course in transfer. Regional accreditation is no guarantee of transfer. TESC is generous, but many schools are not.

If anyone decides to take courses through them, please remember to register as a non-credential student to avoid jumping through a bunch of extra hoops like transcripts, letter of good standing, etc.
