Information on Strayer University - Lots of testing out of courses
#1
I thought I would write a post about what I have learned regarding Strayer University. I have taken a couple courses and some challenge exams. You can "challenge" a course by basically taking the final exam for that course. Most courses have challenge exams available. It might be beneficial to those who wish to test out of even more courses. I am not sure if you can enroll and just take challenge exams or if you have to take some classes. I took some classes. They are now offering some type of "scholarship" if you transfer in so many credits. Below are the pros and cons.

CONS
The cost is $1,725 per course as of 2012
There is a 12 course residency requirement to graduate (if you plan to graduate from there)

PROS
No proctored exams
All exams are taken online and open book
Most courses have challenge exams to test out
Challenge exams test textbook knowledge
Challenge exams cost $100 to take
Challenge exams are taken online and open book (think searchable PDF or kindle textbook)
Challenge exams are not proctored
Challenge exams are multiple choice
Challenge exams have 25-100 questions (usually 50)
You get 90 minutes for 50 questions (passing score is 80%)

If anyone else has any experiences with Strayer I'd like to hear about it.

Do the challenge exams count as in residence credit?

$1,725 x 40 courses = $69,000.

What. The. Hell.

TESC, COSC, and EC all run under $10,000 and in many cases even under $5,000-6,000 for a degree that fills the exact same block. If you took all your classes at TESC I believe the tuition runs about $25,000.

For $69,000 I could get a bachelor's, a $15,000 master's, and a $50,000 PhD.

What in God's name do they offer that makes them an attractive option?

(I am genuinely curious)
