I want to take an Online Bachelor's Degree in the USA but I'm a Filipino
#1
Hellooo ! I apologize if I'm posting this on the wrong category.. I'm a Filipina (20 years old) with a philippine science high school diploma and some college credits from my Bachelor of Science in Psychology in DLSU, I only did 2 terms out of 3 (trimester system) and is currently on a LOA. While my first year of college wasn't my strongest academically, my high school diploma is considered prestigious in the Philippines.
I'm interested in pursuing an online degree in schools from the US, but I'm unsure how my academic background will translate. Additionally, many scholarships seem limited to US citizens.
Here's my situation:

  • I'm currently working in the Philippines and have no plans to immigrate immediately. Finishing my degree here seems financially prudent for now.

  • I'd consider using a relative's US address for applications, but only for educational purposes.
My questions:

  • Has anyone faced a similar situation as an international student?

  • Are there universities in the US known for being more open to international students?

  • What are the realistic odds of securing scholarships as a non-citizen?
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance :3

Welcome to the board! That's a good intro post and questions to get started, you've got some bits and pieces of information, however, you missed the addendum and template in the sticky thread above your post! You really need to give some extra details that are more important in order to provide a bigger overview of your scenario. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

SNHU is the cheapest and easiest for International students, you can enroll in SNHU's India Online program. The courses are taught in English by Indian instructors, and you can receive a 60-65% scholarship, This scholarship reduces the total cost to just $3,735 for four years, which amounts to $933 per year. You can find more information on the SNHU India website: https://in.snhu.edu/

Don't lie about your address. That's a great way to be expelled. Use your address because things will get mailed to you from many colleges. Your diploma would have to be mailed to you! An address doesn't give you citizenship.

Don't expect a scholarship. They are not common! Most of them are for someone graduating from an American high school and going straight to that college. It's rare to find a scholarship elsewhere.

What degree are you looking to complete in the US?

That's SNHU's site for India.

This is their website:

Trying to cheat the system will often backfire.

I was truthful about my address and nationality—I am neither Indian nor American. Despite this, I was accepted and offered a 60% scholarship. I shared the SNHU India website because he is Filipino, allowing him to apply honestly. While he might not receive the same 60% scholarship I did, it could be higher or lower, but it's worth asking. Many students in my cohort received scholarships up to 65%. I enrolled at the end of last year, which contributed to my high scholarship offer. Ultimately, it will depend on various factors.

SNHU has various options for people in the US or outside, I've mentioned their College for America offering partnerships with other non-profits, it's roughly $3K if you can finish in one session and transfer a max of 90 credits into the degree program, but the offerings are slim and restricted to 'business type degrees'... ES.snhu.edu is for the Spanish option, IN.snhu.edu is for the India option, I wonder if there are other offerings for other parts of the world, say Africa or something else.
