Hi all! ? Newbie here/Degree advice

Hey!  So I stumbled on this website after googling around affordable ways to earn a degree. A wealth of information, but I’m getting a bit overwhelmed, so need some direction please.?

About me: I have zero college credits, so will be starting my degree process from scratch.  I’m a SAHM with two small kids.  I’ve recently got a scholarship for a Google certification for UX Design from a women’s organization for women re-entering the workforce that I just begun. I’ll probably finish my certification in a few months. My goal is a full-time job in Tech in UX Design, or Product Management.

helps with resume, mock interviews, and companies they work with, I know I’ll land a job, however when I look at a lot of the job descriptions, they want a bachelors degree. I don’t want to limit my earning potential, or be locked out of opportunities, so a degree is what I want—not just for a job, but for myself and an example for my kids. My husband has his degree, and I don’t want to be the degree-less one anymore.

My background is in the arts-acting, and film production where I produced indie films with a production company I started that have aired on tv in the US, and internationally.  For work to pay the bills, I use to work customer service jobs at banks.  When I was fresh out of high school, and decided I wanted to do acting, I couldn’t fathom getting a theater degree, and going in debt.  I took individual classes instead, and called it a day. 

So my questions:

-*My goal is a Rutgers degree via Sophia.org, study.com, TESC.* I’m in NJ, so am interested in Thomas Edison.  How many transfer credits do they allow in from Sophia.org, study.com and the like? I was reading TESC takes 90, is that correct? I’d be going for a business degree, with a minor is psychology.

-Part 2?If I were to say take classes from Sophia, study.org and transfer to Thomas Edison, and then take a few courses at TESU, could I then transfer those credits to Rutgers University to finish off my bachelors? I read somewhere on here (I can’t find the thread anymore) where someone did Sophia.org and TESC, then transferred to Rutgers with like 6-12 credits left for an accounting degree?

-If I can’t transfer to Rutgers like I want ?, how difficult is it to take my bachelors from TESC, and apply to Rutgers to get my masters? I’m interested in the UX masters program they have.  Thank you!

Have you looked to see if Rutgers accepts ACE credit? If you're working on a TESU degree, it's best to stick with it and finish it there. You will find that transferring isn't that easy and you'll have to take even more courses.

I'm pretty sure Rutgers would accept you for a masters degree with a TESU undergraduate degree considering they almost merged a few years ago.

@OP, you made me look at the Rutgers program, it's very interesting... but the cost is $900/credit! Ouch! I would rather go for something outside the state for a cheaper price, entirely online, and from another public/state or similar institution, maybe even a higher ranked institution that is more affordable. At the end of the day, you want to make sure your undergrad is completed WITH requirements for entry into whatever the program you want to go to...

Not sure why you'd go the TESU/Rutgers route - it's not really viable. TESU courses are too expensive, and this is just a circular way to go about things. Skip that.

Instead, I'd get an inexpensive degree through either Excelsior or UMPI; EC will eliminate the need to get 30cr of RA for TESU, and it's cheaper than TESU anyway; UMPI will take 90cr of transfer and give you 30cr of graded courses, which will be helpful for a master's degree. Either way you do it, you're spending a minimal amount for a bachelor's degree, which you'll want since the master's will cost you.

True. I’m starting to realize it’s best to stick to the online
school.

Rutgers University does take Study.com credits and may likely take other ACE credits such as Sophia.

You'll be on your own planning out which courses to take for the degree. You'll need to talk with Rutgers staff and see if they will preapprove ACE courses to take.

TESU flat rate tuition is $3686 for New Jersey residents. If you take 16 credits with TESU, then you avoid having to pay the residency fee of around $3200. You'll still need another 15 RA credits which can be done with TECEPs or other cheap RA methods. (TESU requires 30 RA credits total)

If you are doing TESU, I would suggest Business Admin with CIS concentration, then also pick up a free associates degree in computer degree. After you are done with your degree, add on any relevant IT certifications. You will also have the option to go for a master's degree.
