Help!! I am sinking in excuses not to study
#11
Linda,

Someone here mentioned on one of the threads that you have excellent scores on your tests. You absolutely do. There is no doubt that you have the ability to continue.

In my Educational Psychology class I took a couple of years ago, they explained that motivation is based on the following equation:

Ability X Value = Motivation

If either one of these is zero, you will not have motivation. It is obvious that you have the ability. The question is, does the BA have value to you? I think it might because, as someone else pointed out, you posted the question here.

About four years ago, my husband encouraged me to take courses at a community college and pursue my degree. I was very reluctant to do so, but "humored" him. I think I wasn't sure I had the ability and was just scared to try.

After my first semester of two classes, I found I was very successful. It gave me the confidence I needed. The next semester, I took three classes. During the summer I took more, and the following semester I took five. Last May, I graduated with an AA in Education and, yesterday, I took my last final to complete my BA in English from TESC.

The thing is, if this degree has even a small amount of value in your eyes, you should try. Whenever I don't feel like doing something, I try to do a little part of it, working under the premise that "something is better than nothing." After taking little chuncks out of a task, little by little, I find it is not nearly as hard to complete it.

Someone mentioned you might want to start with FEMA credits. That is a great suggestion. They are very easy. Do them ASAP and fax the form to FEMA to have them send your transcript to TESC before your tuition runs out in October.

You may also want to change your major to something a little easier (and talk to an advisor while you are still enrolled). Some of the courses you have listed look very hard.

Good luck with everything! I wish you the best.

Just get started. Once you get moving it becomes much easier!

Go for a BS General Business or a BA/BS in Liberal Studies. These are the quickest and easiest degree programs. Also, it's hard to get the depth needed for a major via testing.

From a completely practical point of view, in most cases your major doesn't matter. Unless you plan on a particular career (accounting, etc) it doesn't make a difference. What matters is that you have an accredited degree.

Hi Linda!

You had a really rough May and to expect yourself to be ready to go on with school now is demanding a lot of yourself!

I don't understand the tuition situation. If you have spent the money already, it seems like doing the most that you are able to with this time would be a good idea.

I'd try choosing the most fun or easiest and start there. Use small steps like studying for a half hour at a time and increase your rewards. Try to keep it fun, easy, and rewarding to see if you can get going again.

Don't worry about your children right now. You need to do this for yourself. They'll figure out that getting an education is important at their own time.

Don't forget that you are grieving and healing takes a long time. Take good care of yourself - take naps, cry when you need to, be very patient with yourself. You will feel better soon.

Many hugs,

Thank You for all the encouragement and suggestions. I took some of the advice from each. I am taking it slow, doing a little at a time and starting with FEMA. I did about 1/2 of a FEMA course today and it felt good just to get started without stressing out.

I may change my major or I might just treak it alittle so its not as difficult. I just want to get a BA or BS so I can do an alternate route to a teaching degree. I was looking for the BA in Science/math because I have al ot of credits in them and I thought that would make me a "Highly Qualified" teacher in those areas. Now I don't really care, if I can just get a teaching certificate in any area I can get more sub work and I don't know what state I will end up in when my hubby gets a job.

Thank you again for your support and ideas. This forum has the BEST people!!! Smile

Hey Linda have you looked at Aleks for some maths. They have quite a few of them and TESC is very good about taking them.

I finally did it I took and passed my first FEMA course. Now am I correct in thinking I need to fill out the Transcript request and Fax it in to have the credit sent to TESC? I plan on doing a couple of additional FEMA credits, should I wait and request all the transcripts at once? It wasn't hard, but because of my poor eyesight and need for new glasses I found it tedious. Of course it is a lot less tedious than a regular course.

I looked at ALEKS, but I do not think they have anything advanced enough for me. It has been 20+ years, but I passed Trigonometry and Algebra so I would need Calculus to get additional credit.

I am feeling so much better to have added 1 whole credit to my degree.hilarious

Linda just wait until you take all of the FEMA test that you need. Then just down load the transcript request form on the FEMA website and just mail it to FEMA and have them send it to TESC.

I will only take 4 or 5 more so it is great to know. I may take another one tomorrow.Smile I don't know why I have put these off so long, something about them intimidated me. Now that I have started my fears seem silly.:o
