Foreign Language Credit Suggestions
#1
Hi guys -- I have been lurking around here for a few months and have really enjoyed all of your advice! After this spring semester I will be 3 credit hours shy of completing my BA in political science. The class that I require is French 102 (intro level 2). I was wondering if any of you had any experience with an online program that offers ace accredited french classes? I do not believe that I could get to the level that I need via clep so any alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Does it have to be French? Straighterline offers Spanish I and Spanish II online at $89 each.

Okay, this might be a source of confusion: Some CLEP tests are recommended for only 3 semester hours, the equivalent to one standard lecture class at most colleges on the semester hour system. Some are recommended for 6 sh.

The CLEP language tests are a special case. If the student hits the cutscore of 50, they're recommended for 6 sh. If the student hits a higher cutscore – this may vary by language and school – they're recommended for 12 sh. 12 sh total, not 6 + 12.

6 sh is the equivalent of a standard sequence like First-Year French I (3 sh) and First-Year French II (3 sh). 12 sh is that plus a standard Second-Year French I and II.

Unless your school is unusually ungenerous with CLEP, if it accepts the French CLEP at all, it's likely good for something like "Intro Level 2" at the 100, first-year level.

My current school wont accept CLEP for foreign languages but they do accept the BYU FLATS. Its not an online course but this may be a good option for you.

To go along with what JW shared, you could always attempt the CLEP french exam (assuming your school grants credit for these exams) and see if you can reach the minimum score for Level 1. As JW said, Level 1 is equivalent to a full year (2 semesters) of a foreign language. It sounds like you need to earn the 3 credits from the 2nd semester of a first-year french program. If your school does grant CLEP credit, find out what their minimum score is for level 1 and how much credit they will grant (JW said 6 semester hours of credit, but this is just a recommendation by ACE and not forced on any school). Any duplication due to previous classes taken (like French 101) should be taken care of by the registrar's office as they apply the credit.
