Excelsior - duplicate math credits?
#1
I plan on majoring in Business at Excelsior. Like many in this forum, I am stressing over the College Algebra exam. I WAS good in math in high school - 20 years ago. On my practice tests I am actually doing better with the algebraic portion than some of the basic math - adding fractions, etc. I decided to study for the College Mathematics test to brush up on some of my more basic skills. If I take the CLEP for College Mathematics and the College Algebra CLEP, will I get credit for both? Or would Excelsior consider them similar enough to be duplicates? The only thread I found involved a person who had actual courses along with the tests. I don't have an advisor yet - I'm trying to collect as many credits as possible before enrolling to make sure I can finish within one year.

Thanks!

AM,

Yes, I do believe that you would get credit for both: CLEP College Algebra would get applied against the Pre-Calc requirement, and CLEP College Math would get applied towards your "Remaining Arts & Sciences" requirement.

The reason I believe this is true is because I took an Intermediate Algebra class in 1984 Rolleyes , and Excelsior applied the 4 credits I'd received towards Natural Sciences/Maths. So I don't see why this would be any different for you, even though you got your credits by exam and not a class.

Tell you what....I'll send an online note to the Business advisors through the Excelsior website and ask them and get back to you, okay?

According to the Business Degree Guide I have, you would receive credit for both exams. The caveat that Excelsior has, is that you can earn a maximum of 6 credits in math that are less than pre-calculus. So, you will be fine.

I am also studying for the college algebra exam. I am using the REA book, I am using the West Texas site which gives free tutorials, and I am using a textbook entitled, "Introductory and Intermediate Algebra" by Bittenger. I seem to be absorbing the material quickly and scored a 58 on my first REA practice exam. I am thinking the college algebra exam is doable! At least I hope so...LOL>
