Weldy Wrote:What format are you expected to use when writing the essay for the English comp. clep? I just took this test last week (computer version) and still waiting for the results. It really doesn't tell you what format, just tells you to start typing. Mine was asking to agree or disagree with the topic that was given. I wrote and opening paragraph, 3 paragraphs agreeing with the topic and a conclusion paragraph. Keeping my fingers crossed hoping that I passed. Good luck on your test,

I am just wondering if I need to have double spacing between sentences or paragraphs or something, I don't know. I hope you did well on your test. The waiting is definitely a little stressful.

The waiting is definitely a little stressful. It should have five paragraphs. The CLEP software doesn't really allow you to double space like a word processing program such as MS Word. You could do it manually I suppose, but it wouldn't look right. Just write your first paragraph, skip a line, write the second paragraph, skip a line, etc, etc.

The waiting is definitely a little stressful. Don't sweat the formatting. Space once between paragraphs and that'll be fine. They care more about the content and your ability as a writer than the format.

Thanks for the info. I just wasn't sure if that was something that I was supposed to already know.

Weldy Wrote:What format are you expected to use when writing the essay for the English comp. clep?>> I second the suggestion for using a 5 paragraph essay. That's the format taught in English 101, so while it doesn't specify, keep in mind that your grader is likely an English teacher. I wouldn't bother skipping lines anywhere- it could screw up the page. I'd say these are sent for grading/maybe printed- and so you risk format chaos when you start with the skipping/spacing stuff. I don't know about you, but I have had some strange appearances when I have tried to force spacing by use of the enter key. Same goes for holding down the space bar to force spacing- I'd skip it. To be simple, just let the text wrap as you type, and after the last sentence of your paragraph- hit return, and do a 5 space indent. (I'm typing this post in that format so you can see what I mean) Lastly, keep it clean, 5 or 6 sentences per paragraph, a good opening sentence, strongly divided arguments/topics within each paragraph, and a nice strong summary with conclusion/closing. EDIT: Perfect case in point. I typed exactly how I suggested to you, but the forum automatically re-formatted to left justified. <sigh> |
