I took the english comp with essay today. I think I did well, but I would like to share my experiance with this test. I have taken quite a few cleps before, and I was stunned how I was racing to finish the first part of the test. I think the essay was fairly timed, but the first part was a marathon. I think the reason for this is, that with this test, you should read through all the answer choices. Its not like other cleps where you can spot a right answer and choose it. In english comp you have to look, many times, for the best answer. This can require you tool read all the answers which can be time consuming. I am just pointing out, that when you study, make sure to test yourself with time also. In other tests, I didnt have this problem. I hope this helps.

Great work taking two tests, and nice feedback! What study materials did you use to prepare for English Comp w/ essay?

I studied mostly the IC flashcards. The explanations were invaluble!!! I also printed out the free petersons test from the airforce site and that was helpfull too. Studying IC was like gaining a full years worth of info into English Comp. I know I was there for those classes in high school, but............................................! Who needs high school when you have IC hilarious . Anyway thanks IC again for another 2 tests. I have 2 more next sunday, accounting and computers.

Weaverwoman,
Welcome to credit by exam and this glorious road less travelled!
Additional resources for English Comp: The Princeton Review Study Guide (highly recommend), and Official CLEP Study Guide.
The test is set up in mulitple choice format (not unsimilar to some of the English Comp IC flashcards). However, Princeton Review and the Offical Study Guide have very ACCURATE practice exams to time yourself and simulate your exam before stepping into the test center.
English Comp w/o essay - 2 multiple choice sections, 45 minutes each
English Comp w/ essay - 1 multiple choice and one essay section, 45 minutes each
Do you know if you have to take the essay version?
For what its worth, I personally wouldn't recommend English Comp with essay for your first CLEP. I did it and failed---a lot of kicking afterwards to get myself out of the "depths of despair". Some have done it successfully for their first CLEP, but it may be best to tackle one or two "easier" exams, get used to the test format, etc., and build the momentum before tackling English Comp. Just my 2 cents.
Best wishes! Oh, be sure to check the Exam Specific Feedback section and use the "search" feature! Great info there as well!
