English Comp w/Essay CLEP
#11
Thank you for letting me know. It's a lot easier to type and edit on the computer than to hand write an essay.

That's a good idea! I'll try that with some of the sample topics before I take the test. Thank you!

I took this test about a month ago and got a 53 on it. It wasn't as hard as I was thinking it as going to be. I would very much recommend writing as many timed practice essays in wordpad. You will not have spell check on the real test and wordpad is very similar to the program that is on the test.

In answer to dancer82's question: "So say I get a really low score on the essay... like for argument's sake, say I get a 0 on the essay part, could I still pass if the multiple choice part score is high enough? Or is failing the essay part an automatic fail?"

Yes if you get a all the questions right on the multiple choice you will get a 50 on the exam, there are 50 questions and you get 1 point for each question answered correctly. So if you got 100% correct you would barely get a passing score.

I have attached a list of essay topic questions that are very similar to what are on the real test, I used this list for writing practice essays and I think they were quite accurate. Of course there is no telling what kind of a question you will get on the real test.

Thanks CPdude! Those topics are a bit better than I've found elsewhere. I hope I would get something like that on the real test! I think I could actually write a decent essay on most of those topics.

ok I am so an idiot....I am WRONG that if you get all 50 of the multiple choice questions correct then you will barely get a passing score....it is impossible to get 1 point for every question answered correctly because CLEP scores their tests on a scale of 20 to 80...so if I got all 50 questions correct then I would get a 70 on the test if I failed the essay part LOL and that is just out of the question. I am not sure where I came up with that bit of info. so don't ask me why I thought that, (I thought I read it somewhere). But what I said earlier was BOGUS so delete that piece of info from you mind LOL

sorry for the mistake!!!!!

When searching these boards before I found a thread where someone linked examples of essays and it had a good essay vs. bad essay. But now I can't find it. Anyone have any examples like this that they could link me to? All I remember is the bad essay used first person, like I feel... and I think... so should I just make sure not to use first person?

Are you sure about that? Because that means the essay could only count for 10 points max...

I too took this exam and made a 49, but my exam was upside down and still had to wait six month fail time. I went ahead and took SL first course and passed in 14 days, but now need second semester Freshman English. I retook this exam this week, with essay and found it much easier this time. The essay portion was not as scary as I had taken classes over the past year that demanded written papers. Just review and practice writing five paragraph essays until you feel comfortable and I BET YOU'LL PASS THE FIRST TIME.

BEST OF LUCK.
