Encouraged by UMPI Enrollment Advisor to Enroll
#11
So what if you have already applied for the January 2022 session, BUT haven't finished the Sophia courses you want to. (I have 6 left I want to do.). I have only sent 2 of 3 transcripts in beyond Sophia, so they don't have all my info yet anyway. Can I tell them to hold off until I get the Sophia transcript sent in? (Hopefully will be able to push through by the end of November when my yearly membership runs out.) I mean, they can't enroll us without our permission, can they?

Don't send all of your transcripts until you're ready to be enrolled. Once you're accepted, you're enrolled at UMPI. That doesn't mean that you have classes on the schedule. It's just a step in the process. Once you're enrolled, you need permission from your advisor to transfer in additional classes.

Well, I was also encouraged/pushed to apply before I was really aware of the correct order to do things. I was accepted this week and have not yet sent over any of my Sophia credits. I checked the box that stated that I was interested in PLA, but no one contacted me about that prior to admission.

I emailed my advisor as soon as they assigned me one and asked her to tell me what I can do about ACE and PLA credits, because no one has yet to contact me about it. I know from advice here what I need to do for the PLA, but I would think they would have discussed that before finalizing admission. Anyways, that's a lot of words to say I'll report back here and let you guys know how it goes getting them to accept a LOT of ACE credits after admission.

You won't have an advisor until you're accepted which won't happen until they receive and process all of your transcripts. Once you've been accepted, then you need permission from your advisor to transfer courses into UMPI.

In my experience, YourPace isn't about PLA's. PLA's will take longer than completing the actual course. PLA's are for on campus students. That's the thing with UMPI that many don't understand. There's YourPace which is us folks on here and then the on campus students. The UMPI website is for the on campus students. I wouldn't waste time with PLA's when you can complete the course in a few days to a week. PLA's are more than 1 paper which is what the Final Assessments are.

Generally speaking, you have to be enrolled (or at least have applied) to send CLEP scores in. Otherwise, if they just get CLEP scores for a person and that person doesn't go to the school - what in the world are they supposed to do with them? They are just random scores until they have a student to assign them to.

As for courses transferring in, UMPI seems much better about doing that. I would assume that if you took Accounting 101 at a CC in the past, that UMPI will accept them. Some schools suck about this, UMPI is not one of them.

Make sure you slot your courses correctly in the degree plan before taking other courses - have people here let you know if they will work. Don't worry about previous schools and what they would and would not bring in! You can't really compare schools that way.

I would like feedback on enrolling at UMPI now versus waiting until Mar 2022 session.

Over several years, I have accumulated appx 30 credits from a few regionally accredited (RA) community colleges - 15 of those credits will probably meet UMPI gen-ed requirements.  I was told by the last community college I attended in 2020 that some of my credits are too specialized or too old and could only be counted as elective credits.  Examples include Accounting Principles (ACC 111) class and Computer Information Systems (CIS 105) class.
I have a plan to take appx 11 Sophia courses, 1 Instant Cert, 2 CLEPS, and the Biology with Lab from Study.com (which makes me very nervous) before I enroll at UMPI.
With the holidays approaching and other family/life commitments, I am estimating it will take me until Feb, 2022 to finish, and I'm aiming to enroll in UMPI's Mar 2022 session.

I called UMPI this week and left a message with specific questions and heard back today from an Enrollment Advisor.
She was nice, and was able to answer most of my questions.  Odd part was the longer we talked, the more she sounded like a salesperson.  I could tell she was following a checklist to qualify my eligibility (which is fine with me) but the more we talked, the more she pushed me to enroll right away for the next semester (Jan 2022).  I told her I would rather plan for the Mar 2022 session when I plan to have all of my Sophia/InstantCert/Study.com courses completed.

The one good point the advisor made was that UMPI advisors may give me more credit for my existing community college credits and I would benefit from having an advisor take a look at it all now rather than waiting until Feb/Mar 2022.

I would appreciate advice/comments:
 1. If I enroll for the Jan 2022 session but do not have all of my transfer credits (Sophia, etc) complete, will they allow me to hold off on attending until Mar, 2022?
 2. Do you see any problem with enrolling now at UMPI for the January 2022 session?  What if I don't have all of my remaining Sophia/CLEP/InstantCert courses finished in time?

Thank you for any insight you can give me.    Smile
Welcome to the forum. I agree with ss20ts.It looks like you have done some research and you have a very good plan of action. Stick to it . Allow me to suggest you to apply for Fafsa now. You might qualify for financial help. I did the biology with lab at study.com and it was no fun. I can pm you some tips of what I did if you want.

I would love your tips on Biology w/Lab at Study.com. I'm in the middle of it now and I think I developed ADD. I find the format long and dragged out that I'm having a hard time paying attention. Interesting thing, I work in pharma sales and this should be right up my alley! I took and passed the Sophia Human Biology course in a matter of a couple of hours and thought it was great.

Yes, I understand this, but I have been accepted and do have an advisor.  The enrollment advisors don't tell you this when you contact them on the phone, because I specifically asked about both PLA and ACE credits.  I told him that I was working through ACE credits and planned to do so up until the next session started and was told it would be no problem and that I should apply while we were on the phone.

So, I don't know if this is the first time someone has gotten it wrong, but it's my situation now.  If they won't let me bring in my Sophia credits and approve me for the three classes I want to do on InstantCert and SDC, I'll ask them how to drop and reapply and will let people here know what the experience is.

2legit2quit.  Wow, the pushy enrollment advisors went after you as well.  It seems they will mislead you and say anything to convince you to enroll right away.  The one I spoke with a few days ago won't leave me alone - emailing and calling constantly.  She sent an email with a direct link to enroll and calls encouraging me to click the link in her email to enroll right away.  I'm going to tell her that I chose another school so she will leave me alone.  When I am ready to enroll, I will just enroll directly via UMPI's website.  I would rather deal directly with the school for my entire enrollment.

Dealing with these outsourced enrollment advisors is such a tacky approach - reminds me of Ashford University.  If I recall, Ashford got into trouble with the Department of Education for their robo-emails and pushy recruiting practices.  I hope UMPI doesn't follow this same path.

Please keep me posted on how things work out 2legit2quit.  I am going to also have several ACE credits to transfer when I enroll in March 2022.  I hope you are able to confirm if you are dealing with a legitimate UMPI registrar and not just one of the telemarketer enrollment advisors.  Please let me know how it goes getting your ACE credits transferred.   Smile

I think you should specifically mention to your academic advisor that that enrollment advisor shared misleading information in order to get you enrolled ASAP. It is not OK.

They're enrollment counselors. They're there to aid you through the process of applying. They don't have anything to do with PLA or ACE credits. That's not in their wheelhouse at all.
