Hello,
I'm in the process of applying to Empire State College and am encountering a problem that surprises and perplexes me. I attended a small Catholic high school in the Boston area and graduated in 1985. The school closed a few years after my graduation (a lot of Boston area schools closed due to financial woes and dwindling enrollment.) Empire is requiring me to prove that the school was accredited by Massachusetts at the time of my attendance. They also have issues with the officialness of my transcript, which was sent directly from the Archiocese and I am assured had the necessary seals, etc. My application is on hold until they receive suitable proof and the Jan. 1st deadline looms. Admissions even suggested in the email that I investigate GED programs at my local community college. I'm 42 years old, made a huge decision to go back to complete my BA, thought I had made a good choice with Empire because their mission is to serve working adults like me,and now I'm being told I may need to go get a GED before I can start college. Incidentally, I was admitted to Cornell back in 1985 with no questions about my high school being raised. The fact that Cornell presumably was satified with my school's status doesn't count for anything with Empire. Is this just an admistrative blip, or is Empire not what it appears to be? Does anyone here have experience with Empire? I am at a loss...
Thanks for any and all insights...

Does the state keep the records they need about your high school? I would start there; I can't imagine you'd have to take the GED. Good luck!

Contact ESE - Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
I would start by calling this department and if they can't help you they should know who can.

Quote: In this day and age colleges are BEGGING for students- I can direct you to 2 accredited colleges TODAY that will give you 100% free tuition (one is NA one is RA). Why? Schools need bodies.
Jennifer,
I imagine Andrew Jackson is the NA school you are talking about with free tuition. Will you please tell me the name of the RA college with free tuition?
Thanks!

Thanks! As soon as I read it I remembered you posting about it before. I guess I just put it out of my mind because it wasn't online and I live in Maryland.
My 17 year old daughter is thinking of applying to Andrew Jackson for a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice and I wanted to be sure she had checked out all of her options first. She has already been accepted into Lynn University's Masters of Science in Criminal Justice Administration program but I don't think she or I can afford it.
Thanks again for always being so helpful and quick to answer people's questions!

I looked at Empire since some of my union's training courses transfer over. Their residency requirement and other administrative quirks sent me running in another direction!

Yes! Ashford University (RA) in Clinton, Iowa is offering free undergrad tuition $16,500 (plus housing if needed $6000) to anyone coming in at a 3.5 GPA or higher. Renewable- so it's a free degree with free housing. I have shown a few local friends, and I can't wrap my brain around why people are not climbing over each other to sign up...but they don't. <shrug> I even have a bff who is sending her child to the local cc for his gen eds ($1200 per sem) rather than getting his gen eds for free down the street. <uhhhh ok?> This is for the on campus program only- but look on the bright side, we could go out for coffee
The reason I know about this program is because it's local. It just takes digging by a motivated person to find similarly extraordinarily deals in a town near them.
I'm scouring the Ashford website trying to find this info?
Where? Where? Where on the website!!!!!!
I SO want to get a degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics!
I'll pack the cats and the suitcases in the car and move for this one!

It's not on the website, it was an ad in our local newspaper. Go to Ashford .edu and call the local Clinton number. Ask about the GPA scholarship- they can email you the pdf document and or tell you about it. They have an agreement in the sciences with University of Iowa, I think it's a 3+2 or similar. Anyway, hurry, the deadline is soon- I think it's for Spring.

She just applied today. That's her goal, to earn her masters while she is still a teenager. She's pretty excited. I'm happy, too, because she has enough money to pay for it herself.
