You're absolutely right! I'm all for it! I have family and friends that are Veterans and there should be a preference.

A lot of government jobs give veterans' preference, but I didn't say it made it easy. It's not easy if you're bad at test taking or you're dumb. You have to pass to get the preference points. Even if you do get the preference points, if you score in the 70s or 80s, you're going to have a lot of non-veterans chosen ahead of you. A lot of veterans do have to learn how to transition from the military environment to the civilian environment. I have no problem with veterans' preference as long as the right candidates ultimately get hired.

That right there has been a problem some places I've been. Vet preference is all well and good, but it needs to be applied among those actually qualified for the job. The fact that some spots automatically bump any vet into 'most qualified' bugs me to no end. I had a place tell me that I'd be an automatic hire for a senior mechanic position when I have absolutely no experience in the job.
Sorry, rant over, going back to my textbook now...

It's a controversial thing to say, and I have several veterans in my family. I know that I worked for a security company that gave an Air Force veteran the operations management position at a new location even though he had no experience with running a company. He was ultimately fired because he didn't know what he was doing. But, while he was in place, he gave supervisory positions to people who were in the military. One of them, who was an E9, royally screwed up and was banned from the HQ of the government contract we had. They eventually learned their lesson and started promoting people based on previous supervisory experience in the civilian world and those who performed well at the company.
IIRC, I replaced a veteran who was demoted and turned out to be their longest lasting supervisor until I left for another job. One veteran was upset that he was never promoted, but he was also having relations with his mistress out in the parking lot. Then, there was the veteran who admitted to driving drunk and the police letting him go because he was a veteran. We also had a lot of non-veterans screw up. Employers just have to make the effort to figure out who is a good fit regardless of veteran status. If someone has security forces or military police experience, then I can see that as being a plus. If they were working in a non-law enforcement or non-security position, then their experience won't automatically translate to civilian criminal justice jobs. I like how Texas created a system to identify which military jobs are related to civilian jobs in order to make it easier to hire veterans for appropriate positions.

Waiting on a response from the good Dr., but I have no idea about the second group of requirements.
"CJS 250 Police Organization and
Administration
or
CJS 230 Security Management
(APL)
or
FTA 216 Municipal Fire
Administration"
Don't know where these are offered short of a full semester class from a college.
We are all on the same side here, trying to better our lives....so let's get along and help each other out.

I wonder if Penn Foster's Police Management would work.

That course is ACE evaluated, but says it has 3 prerequisites: Introduction to Criminal Justice (CJS101) which is needed anyway, but also Ethics in Criminal Justice (CJS105) and Police Studies (CJS120).

Just came upon the following as a possible substitution for "Municipal Fire Administration":
Intro to Emergency Management for Fire Service
MU FRTI - Online Classes
University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI), a premier unit of MU Extension. Maybe as little as $50 out-of-pocket, 1 credit. Possibly ACE. Description says "ACE Credit Recommendation: In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in fire science, fire administration, fire protection, emergency management, or emergency medical services (7/14)." Says fire administration right there. Also, "It addresses federal, state and local roles and responsibilities in a major disaster, with an emphasis on government coordination and the solutions to complicated problems that frequently arise in disasters. This course is designed for fire fighters, local jurisdiction officials, emergency managers, volunteers and other emergency service personnel." Bold mine.
I'm busy on something else right now so don't have time to delve more right this second, but maybe someone else can do follow-up. I'm always up for continuing ed, and cool certs along the way would be awesome. $50 for an MU FRTI class on a subject I'd be up for learning about + $20 TRCC app fee for a neat certificate would be a good deal IMO.
