Does ALEKS actually help you earn credits or is more of a tool (tutor)?
#1
I'm a little confused. I have researched Straighterline and it looks like an AWESOME deal. I am also researching ALEKS and it seems like it's a lot more affordable, but I am wondering what the biggest difference between the two is.

Do you actually just pay a set monthly price for ALEKS and earn as many credits as possible? I've heard ALL kinds of names thrown around on this forum and I am attempting to become as familiar with them as I can.

What I DO know, as of now, is that Straighterline could possibly be more affordable for me than CLEPS, should I be completing 3 courses a month through them.

Pinkie, you are pretty much AWESOME and broke everything down for me. Too bad ALEKS doesn't have English and a few more social sciences Wink

No problem Smile

Straighterline is open book quizzes and tests (doesn't mean that they are easy), but through these two sources you can knock out a bunch of credits you may not have.

They are self-paced and do not require a proctor.

...and here I was thinking that CLEPS were my only option. Don't get me wrong. I thought CLEPS were an AWESOME and affordable option...didn't even realize there were even BETTER options. I'm doubly excited about my journey now. I can't wait until the day I receive my diploma from TESC Smile. Bachelors degree here I come!

It seems similar to ALEKS, if I am correct. However, I learned recently that you can actually EARN your credits through ALEKS. It's even cheaper than CLEPS apparently! Is InstantCert the same way? It looks like it's also only $20/month. How does it differ from ALEKS, in your opinion?

It looks like you can do a LOT more through Straighterline, if I am correct. Additionally, I just posted a thread about InstantCert.

I went to that ACE link, but I am not sure what option I should be registering for and why...does it coincide with ALEKS/Straighterline? Is it something you have to do before taking ALEKS/Straighterline classes? Thanks so much.

ALEKS will teach you step-by-step how to do the problems. IC helps point you in the right direction about what you need to study to be prepared for the CLEP/DSST/ECE. With IC, sometimes the cards are enough, other times, they let you know that you need to do a little work. For example, if you see an IC card telling you about a certain concept, and you don't already know it or can't learn it just from reading the card, then you need to go watch a youtube lecture or read more about it online.

ALEKS can be a standalone math program and many people use it just to better learn math, while there's no real reason to use IC if you're not specifically studying for a test.

Hope that helps and of course, it's just my opinion.

ALEKS is probably the better option if you struggle with math. It's a really great teacher and has been developed to only focus on the areas where you need improvement. You will take an assessment and if you already know certain things, you won't see them again. ALEKS is also a little bit cheaper, but do be prepared. You really have to learn well with ALEKS. I liked it and it gave me a lot more confidence in math, but in the end, I got a little bored and used the skills I gained in ALEKS to go take the math CLEP.
