Devry is making my life hard.
#11
yeah. I wish that this process involved the records showing my efforts toward paying Devry off. with me, it's not cheating them out of money owed. I simply didn't find it useful or convenient to remain a student there. The penalty for that shouldn't have to be sitting out on a school of my choice, but apparently that is the "rough situation" I am dealing with. In the meantime, I'm hoping to create a degree plan that will allow me to complete this degree as soon as possible. Hopefully the help of this forum will make that situation smoother.

Right! I'm doing the most SL courses I can and hope to use this forum to help me find alternatives for courses offered at Excelsior. That way, when I do finally enroll, I'll have the bulk of my work complete!

Absolutely, You can continue to bank credits at CLEP, DSST and Straighterline while you deal with the debt. This reason is another why so many of us dislike the for profit schools with heavy duty sales teams that squeeze people later when they can least afford it. We'll be delighted to offer advice on your progress into Excelsior if needed, have you actually filled in the enrollment paperwork at Excelsior? Are you planning to take 12 credits there for residency or just pay the expensive enrollment fee? If you are planning to take 12 credits there you might want to consider a partnership agreement before fully enrolling.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

Good for you for keeping up with the testing despite the financial difficulties. And I'm not saying I think you were trying to cheat them (indeed, I think DeVry cheated you out of your $$$), but that is the colleges' reasoning behind holding transcripts. In the meantime, just keep testing away.

And have you considered TESC instead of Excelsior? Using TECEPs makes the Pay Per Credit tuition plan very reasonable. Good luck!

Being that I have a real interest in the Commincations degree, I don't mind having to take time with some of their classes (if there are no credit by exam alternatives)

I have already filled out the enrollment paperwork. When I log in, it won't let me actually enroll in classes because they are still awaiting my transcripts. They are going to have to wait. I'm so happy, excited and thankful to have your help!

I have considered TESC, but I plan to apply to LSU's MBA program after completing the bachelor's. To my understanding, TESC doesn't award letter grades. LSU has a GPA requirement, and I don't want to give them any reason to decline me. Excelsior seems like a more reasonable choice in this case. Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks!

Sanantone, thanks for your insight. I was thinking about just applying to another school, but you confirmed my thoughts for me. No need it paying more app fees if they all will find out about Devry anyway

I think you're going to have to pay at some point. But, may I just have a heart attack for a second? $5000 for 5 credits?! That's crazy!

There really won't be much of a difference between TESC and Excelsior when it comes to grades. I can never remember if Excelsior awards grades for Straighterline courses. I think they don't. They awarded grades for 2-digit DSSTs, but those are all gone. They never awarded grades for CLEP. They will include Uexcel grades into your GPA. They also include transfer credit grades into your GPA. TESC only awards credits for their online and guided study courses. Transfer credits are not included in your TESC GPA.

When you apply to graduate school, the grade calculated by your undergraduate school will not matter. You will be required to send transcripts from all colleges attended, and the graduate school will calculate your cumulative GPA. When you pass a Uexcel, it doesn't matter which school you decide to attend; you will have an Excelsior transcript with the Uexcel grades.

I graduated from TESC with a BA before they had the required liberal arts capstone (that comes with a grade). I had no TESC GPA, but I did have many graded credits from other schools. The university I attended for my master's degree calculated a GPA based on all of my college transcripts.

What happens at a lot of schools that do not follow the quarter or semester system is that a lot students owe money when they dropout. When a school does not follow a traditional school year, the government figures out financial aid based on rolling 6 months and rolling 12 months periods. If you were given a financial aid award based on being a full-time or half-time student and you did not complete at least 6 credits for half-time or 12 credits for full-time in a 6-month period before dropping out, all or part of your financial aid will be sent back. If you did not complete 12 credits as a half-time student or 24 credits as a full-time student in a 12-month period, all or part of your financial aid will be sent back. This leaves the student with a balance for courses already taken.

Have you talked to DeVry about 1. reducing your debt, and 2. putting you on a formal re-payment plan? It may be worth trying to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement where you pay them some of what you owe and they release your grades....may not work but wouldn't hurt to ask, they are a business after all.

I think most schools have this policy, not just for profits. I owed some money when a left a non-profit, private school and they would not release my transcripts until I paid which delayed when I could enroll at the CC.
