Devry is making my life hard.
#1
I applied to Excelsior to finally finish my bachelors. I am hoping to get a Liberal Arts Degree in Communications. The majority of my credits will be acquired through credit by exam. I even enrolled with Straighter Line to help speed the process. I want to complete the process as quickly and efficiently as possible, but there's one holdup:

DeVry University wants $2800 from me before they release my transcripts. Excelsior won't let me complete enrollment because they have to have all of my transcripts, even if I'm willing to let those credits go. (It was only like, 5 credits.)

Has anyone had this issue before? If so, what did you do? Thanks

Hi there Smile
Yep they definitely won't release your official transcripts until all fees are paid. They can give you unofficial transcripts, but Excelsior will want an official copy. There's really no way around this, I know someone who had a lawyer send a letter to her previous school just to try to get one copy, but it didn't happen. You would either have to pay DeVry, or just let the 5 credits go.

I am willing to let the credits go. I wasn't worried about transferring them in the first place. I didn't even mention that I attended the school.

i know lol! getting credits isn't the issue. But based on Excelsior, it's looking like no matter if I want to transfer to another school, my outstanding balance at Devry will prohibit new enrollment elsewhere.

Most schools will want all of your transcripts before they will let you enroll. I believe TESC and COSC are the same as Excelsior. Colorado Technical University and Central Texas College let me enroll without a Western International University transcript, but said they had to have it before I graduated. American Military/Public University would not let me enroll. I disputed with WIU for years over the charges, but finally gave in and paid the remaining balance.

I don't mind paying Devry. I originally owed 5k, so my balance is significantly lower. I just find it disappointing that my educational efforts are postponed because of this. Thanks for all your help!

Sanantone, thanks for your insight. I was thinking about just applying to another school, but you confirmed my thoughts for me. No need it paying more app fees if they all will find out about Devry anyway

The purpose of needing all your credits/ transcripts before you enroll is to make sure that you have actually paid all of your previous schools. They go through National Student Clearinghouse to make sure you are not in arrears with other schools before enrolling you. After all, if you are willing to try to cheat another school out of money you owe them, it stands to reason that you would be a high risk to cheat Excelsior out of the money you would owe them. At least, that is the reasoning behind this rule. It's not at all about being "willing to let 5 credits go." Sorry, I know that's a rough situation to be in.

The only thing postponed is enrolling, you're still able to continue your educational goals by accumulating college credits via SL, CLEP, etc. Good luck!
